IX sucked. VIII was better.
I do prefer action RPGs but I think you just have no idea what you're talking about.
I'm playing through Dungeon Travelers 2 which is definitely a game that requires much more patience than any Final Fantasy. (Just hit the post-game the other day baybee!)
FFIX is notoriously slow. Just search "FFIX slow" and you'll find numerous threads about this one game in particular. I have no clue why you are trying to argue this.
And you know what, I'll even do you a solid and link one to you to save you a bit of time!

All those hours I spent playing IX went by so quickly though. I'd start playing in the morning, and before I realized it, I was 26.
Trance system was also pretty garbage (I still like FF9 though, but hate arguing about best, worst, etc.).
Game is indeed slow as fuck, even with ATB speed maxed out there is a limit due to just unavoidable animations. It was pretty cool for important/boss battles, but for general fighting it was a nightmare.
Good thing I liked the battle theme so much. I love IX though, but not because of gameplay. Hard to say I like any FF before like...12 (OK X-2) for gameplay.
All this talk makes me want to play these games again ... any good emulators out there that I can get all of (or at least most of) the FF games?
Pick a game, google it. FF7 is on SE's platform. Cloud saving and all that. FF8 is on steam. The rest are pretty easy to track down.
True, just didn't know if there were any in particular that were good. I'm gonna go on a google spree today. In addition to watching Blizzcon footage from home instead of pretending that I'm actually a productive member of society.
IX had two totally separate plots and did a shit tier job segueing between them, but I don't care how people rank the FFs as long as we can all agree X was easily the worst. Spanish soap operas have better plots/acting and comparable gameplay.
The ability to quick-switch party members and the Sphere Grid were both highly enjoyable features. Monster Arena was fun too. The only thing that breaks it down for me is at the end of the day it's Attack Reels or bust.
The sphere grid made the characters functionally comparable (All of my characters were DD-healer-buffers), which made character hot swapping feel like extra lives rather than a strategic element. Combine in the fact that most things don't resist delay penalties until the post-game and you have a turn-based battle system that doesn't even require strategy and totally forgives you your mistakes.
And you neglect the whole part where you need to get key spheres and grind a ton to get there. What you said doesn't describe the vast majority of the game and you have to specifically try to make that happen.
Its in no way necessary but definitely possible if you want to do it. And if you wanted to do it, why complain about it later?
I think that most of us here can agree that XI was simultaneously both the best and worst FF game.
Most of my memories of FFX include Quick Attack, Hyper Mighty Guard and Attack Reels. I'm not sure what other attacks there are...maybe Blitz Ace?
