A 3 hour wait to be seated at Red Lobster?
Where ever you live is terrible and you should nuke it.

The city I grew up in and recently just moved from literally has a Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel, Crapplebees, Outback Steakhouse, and Olive Garden. There is one chinese restaurant that is average at best, a shithouse for mexican (which all the locals love), and a handful of original mom & pop places and what not. Places like Outback and Red Lobster almost always have a full parking lot from 5:30pm-9pm from Thursday - Saturday night. It's incredible and crazy.
My wife and I ate at a small restaurant called Juan Miguel's last night. I ordered a couple of Chimi's and wifey got the Juan Miguel "special". Before tax it was $22.80 and some really good food with great service. I love living in an area with so many choices for dining where chain crap shops like the 100 iterations of Applebees is not necessary.
Pittsburgh really has a pretty good food scene too.
Also, the local accent makes people with Downs feel a little more normal.
Sounds like where my MiL lives, about an hour and a half west of Binghamton NY.
Chilis, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Outback, Old Country Buffet, Five Guys, Friendly's. That's it. Have to drive another 30 mins to get to any real food.
We were there over Thanksgiving I said to the wifey that we should open a traditional American restaurant that offers better food at a similar price to these shit holes and make a killing. Couldn't do anything "cool" though because the locals would be unlikely to try it.
We brought her parents to a tapas place in Corning and they didn't understand what was going on. Her sisters were a little more clued in, but still not exactly sure what was happening. Makes me sad that people just don't know good food.
Man Toki you and I are thinking identical about people not having a clue. The town I'm speaking of is Jackson, Michigan. The irony is square mileage wise the county is bigger than Washtenaw county (U of M) but it has practically nothing in it. My wife is filipino so naturally she'll make lumpia (meat egg roll with some veggies) and all of our friends (myself included) think they're amazing. She always uses beef. A friend of hers will make them with the smallest amount of ground pork, stuff the wrapper with lettuce, and was selling them at work for $8/dozen and selling like crazy. When people don't know....lol.
I still contend that food desert designation should apply to places that only have giant chains and no one actually making food.
My own win. Check came from Tiger today. New 4k monitor here I come!
I make a ground pork lettuce wrap with some asian flavors that are really good and cheap.
Boston Butter lettuce, ground pork, fish sauce, lemongrass, some onion, ginger, garlic, and I think a little yellow pepper? Saute it all together, wrap with the lettuce, and topped with some chopped dry roasted peanuts. Probably missing a couple ingredients, but its healthy, tasty, and easy to make.
They have grocery stores in the area, but I guess the people are fat and lazy. Also, they're what my wife calls potato hill people. They all look inbred and are shaped like potatoes.
Some of the things my wife describes eating while growing up sound terrible. I'm just glad my dad enjoyed cooking and made delicious food.
I'm getting a good one this time!!
