Well if I had to do a top 10, in no particular order:

Rhodes, Clapton, Slash, Satriani, Hendrix, Les Paul, Dime Bag, SRV, Prince, Page.

And even though they would never make anyone's top 10, I could listen to people like Mark Durante, Tom Maxwell, Dan Donegan, Adam Jones all day and never get bored with their work.

This is the most acceptable list so far over everything else posted. And it's not perfect either but it has the names on it that it should. As big of a Metallica fan as I am you simply cannot include Kirk on one of these lists.

Where's Santana, Neil Young, Gilmore, Harrison, Townshend, EVH, B.B., Keith, my eyes.

Santana is the worst great guitarist that always get included in these lists. He's an amazing soloist and has fantastic tone, but I'm not sure if he even knows what a chord is some 50 or so years into his career. He's made a career out of endlessing wanking over a rhythm section while never having to spend time actually playing rhythm. Alot of it isn't even necessarily memorable wanking. Outside of like... Black Magic Woman, Game of Love, and Smooth I doubt most people would even be able to remember a Santana lick off the top of their head.

That's said basically he's living the dream of every lead guitarist on Earth and I'm just jelly.

I agree but I think a strong case can be made for a top 20 which I think would be very fair for this forum after reading everyone's posts on the subject.

Tony Iommi is almost wholly responsible for what the world defines as metal. It's pretty simple to put him at the top of any list of metal guitarists solely for the initial innovation he brought.

In terms of raw technical ability Petrucci is right at the top, but with how negatively alot of people view Dream Theater he won't make the list for people that aren't already fans of progressive rock/metal.

I like Petrucci, and his signature Jazz III picks are a gift to mankind, but if we're gonna talk overly excessive prog metal wanking, Tosin Abasi is for sure the current and likely future king.

Standard viewpoint of alot of prog rock/metal, or jazz, fusion, etc. The pure auditory masturbation of those genres turns alot of people off, and Dream Theater more so then alot of other bands has taken it to some major extremes. It's no surprise that two of their generally better recieved albums (Images and Words & Train of Thought) are the ones where they toned it down and had more focus on writing actual songs.
