met my gf's family monday night. it was a success. we were both surprised by how mellow they were: they only asked us one question, which was sort of a joke and didn't even get answered lol. ended up just being a nice, chill evening, playing pool with her brother and sister, watching TV with her parents, having dinner. her brother is a cute kid. likes pokemon and minecraft. he's 8.

"so aside from the books, the unusual cars, the <a few other things i can't think of atm>, what do you two have in common?", since i know someone will ask.

we talked about the actual answer on the way back. mostly it's personality stuff. we have similar senses of humor, similar taste in books/movies/games, etc. i say similar, because while we like each others' preferences, our own tastes diverge slightly, so we end up with a small amount of overlap and a HUGE pool of "ive wanted to read that forever but haven't gotten to it, how is it?"

Was planning to get new Pokemon sun/moon game for Gf birthday on Friday. Found out it isn't out until fall. Fail!!!

Did a quick search for 3DS rpg since she is almost done playing shin Megan's tensei 4. Found persona q! She'll love that. Call around only one EB games has it and it's 30min away, if no traffic. And the store closes in 130min. I zoom out and pick it up! My day is done.

Yeah having things in common is definitely not a requirement. My wife and I have some things in common but we have our own stuff too.

Yeah it's about having enough in common that well you can talk and do things together that you both enjoy but enough that isn't a big deal when you want to do something with the guys/girls or just do something along.

That's pretty spot on. My wife and I have almost no interests in common, but we make fun of all the same shit.

There's so much stupid shit (mostly from the Internet) that new parents get caught up in, and if my wife and I didn't look at 95% of it and both say "that's fucking stupid", raising kids would be unbearable.

nothing you guys have said bothers me, so far. we have a few interests that overlap, a few that don't. can't really say as far as hating the same things. we agree pretty well on politics and religion, but haven't really had a bitching session.

the next step, i think, is for me to get that apartment in town i've been talking about for years. lets us have a more equal dating situation, instead of me always at her place. plus that way i can see how she handles the gaming, since she hasn't really done online gaming.

Online gaming isn't for everyone. If she tolerates you doing it, that's already asking quite a bit. Don't make her feel pressured to enjoy it as well. Remember, it's not about loving the same things. It's about not hating something the other person loves.
