It's very different when you have a young child though. They get sick a lot the first few years. Parents understand and it really shouldn't be an issue. My wife and I alternate days, but I had a stretch where I missed 4-5 days a month for 3 months. My supervisor has a kid 6 months older than mine and had to miss about the same.

Idk. I've been that manager even before having kids and while it does suck, I never held it against anyone.

Personally I'd find another job then telk them to go fuck themselves. My daughter > them.

Think my wife only gets 3 call outs a year as a nurse.

I get like 14, hashtag civil service.

4 times in 2 months is ridiculous.

Yeah. I hate jumping on the wagon here but that's a lot of days in a short span. That's a lot of lost hours and rushed coverage. I don't have kids though so I guess that means I should shut up.

Coworker has a son who went into diabetic coma twice last year and got written up for taking over 10 days off.

Sometimes kids go through bouts of sickness it is fairly normal my son is perfectly healthy and got sick back to back a couple of times but then it calmed down and we can go through really long periods where he doesn't get sick. You just never know and if your kid is sick then you have to stay home with them they can't go to daycare. As a parent your hands are tied.

TV hasn't been working correctly for like an hour or so (thanks Comcast), but I just picked up Dragon Quest 7 for the 3DS, so interruptions while starting it up.

Are we talking just sniffles and cough/minor cold stuff here? Cause unless kids have changed greatly in the last several years being really sick as often as is being said seems quite a lot. And growing up I don't think anyone in my daycare every didn't come in for just a cold. Bout only times anyone would not come was really major stuff (like anything you'd go to a hospital for), high fevers, and chicken pox. Except me I had the really good luck to get chicken pox during spring break. A full year after everyone else in our daycare got it .

Cass was talking about fevers. Fevers, diarrhea, and rashes are auto game overs for being able to go to daycare.

Not even that. It is because fever, diarrhea, and rashes are all symptoms of some of the worst communicable diseases that pass easily around daycares like rotovirus which can be deadly, hand foot and mouth which is terrible to have, and all the other shit that kids are getting now thanks to the antivaccine parents.

It's not even just about danger, it's that one sick kid can make 5 others sick and then their parents have to stay home. Having zero tolerance reduces the total amount of time parents have to miss work, it just sucks when it is your kid.

That too. Though I have never had a daycare that had zero tolerance for a regular cold. Runny noses and sniffles all over the place!

i understand that taking care of your kid calls for leaving work sometimes, but excusing nearly a month out of a year for it, and expecting to continue to get paid the same as people not taking days off, is silly.

I doubt the days off are paid at a grocery store.

When my wife goes back to work, maybe we'll get a nanny, and not have to deal with this shit.

Erm, except if the nanny gets sick

    Shit

I always thought that was one of those things that hasn't been around since colonial times for some reason, but found out my nephew just got over it last week. And that my sister's boys had it some time last year.

Having retired grandparents close by can help there, but not always an option.

Most places I've worked at, though, have usually been like 3 sick days, then 6 months you get a refund if you spent 'em all. Sometimes they let you lump 'em as one if you're out sequentially, but others not. They usually want some kind of doctor's note if you do, though. Pair it all with our broken healthcare system, though, and it's not hard to see why people take second fiddle to profit in a lot of places.

Sweden we are not. It's amusing seeing people turn into the callous and indifferent manager that America needs.

While it's not wrong per se, as it's definitely how most companies would frown upon calling out, it doesn't mean we're not misguided as a country when it comes to work leave. Shit, even the Congolese get 26 days of paid leave after 1 year.
