Makes no difference to me tbh. But the wife wants him baptized so w/e. I'm all for letting the kid make up his own mind when he's older about God/religion.

That's how I feel about my kids having been baptized. It made their grandparents (in Mexico) very happy so whatever. If they choose another path I'll support that regardless.

Nah. It's important to my wife that he at least gets baptized. She is fairly religious. I am not. I'll give her this one. But she is well aware of my stance on organized religion and allowing a person to make their own decisions regarding it. Baptized or no in my eyes when you die you die. There's nothing after. No supreme deity that magically takes you to heaven etc.

Man won't you be surprised when you wake up in heaven and some dope ass angels are like what up Playa?

My gf(fiance) will want ours baptized too since her family is stupid religious and we'll do it for them, but the kids gotta make his own mind up later on. Shit, my dad is Baptist and they pretty much preach that you should do that shit when you're an adult and understand it so at least my family won't go crazy over it. He might go to one Christmas mass in his life if he's unlucky, fucking hated that shit.

I am one of those who generally does not agree with baptizing, as anyone questioning later in life may fear that said baptism tied them to the religion they're not so sure about. It's another reason to think, "if I don't believe, but I've been baptized, am I going to be punished?", colored according to whatever denomination did it. However, one hopes that anyone like that can eventually determine it was just some water, nothing significant, and if they're going to be atheist or agnostic, they can do so without guilt or fear.

the parents need to explain to the children that it is ultimately their decision whether they want to continue in the faith of their parents, or go on their own, but i see no reason it's bad to baptize your kids. it's not like baptism raises the chances of your kids being autistic or something

The actual act of baptizing (the water) is harmless - it's all the brainwashing that goes with it that's problematic. Sounds like Brill is willing to offer a dissenting opinion to any craziness his wife believes, so the kid should turn out alright.

I was just thinking, its like 1 in 3 or something for autism nowadays.

Look at the person to your left. Now look at the person to your right. One of you is still looking left.

It's not a dissenting opinion at all. My beliefs simply happen to be different than those of my wife. She is an ardent believer. I am not. I am accepting of everyone's beliefs because they are just that. Their own beliefs. If he decides that he's all in on religion, that is his decision to make, whether I agree or disagree. My concern is while I am accepting of other people's beliefs I don't know how my wife would react if the kid told her he didn't believe in God. And that will be a very interesting time should that ever come pass.

Invite family to baptism, get free gifts, make some buffalo wing dip? Sounds decent enough to me.

As mentioned later, the issue is significantly deeper than that. Someone who is questioning and/or otherwise psychologically compromised, like those clinically depressed, can latch onto baptism, Bible studies, or any other similar things as something to be afraid of. Consider self-hating gays who are raised in highly religious households and who consider themselves "wrong," for example—while trying to overcome, anything tying them to the religion that has helped foster their fears is another issue to fight down. People who become atheist may remember being religious, and may be afraid of consequences if they have "made the wrong choice." Neither party can say, "well, I don't believe in God now, so all of my fears are gone," because it doesn't work like that. Their lives are potentially colored by every little thing.

Anyone familiar with clinical depression or any other deeply compromising psychological issues can understand what that is like. It isn't paranoia, either, considering that religious denominations have all manner of dogma that followers are expected to adhere to. If someone is raised in this environment, and is genetically or otherwise susceptible to depression but eventually questions, it can be extremely difficult to deal with things that people may just consider harmless throwaways. And if the reception is like some of what's been said in this thread (e.g., your essentially saying "what are you afraid of, the boogeyman?"), it only makes things worse.
