text a guy I've been seeing for a few months, who is a mega-flake - combination of ADHD, depression, potheadedness, and all-around anxiety, I can understand this - and asked him how he's doing and does he want to hang out this weekend?
he replies back a day later: "hey! I just joined a gym!!"
...lol
so I thought, how do I reply to that? do I ignore it? eh, that's an option but it's feeding into a sort of passive-aggressive weirdness that I'd rather avoid. do I get upset? absolutely not, that doesn't help anyone (least of all me), getting upset about someone who isn't taking you very seriously is some bitch-ass bullshit. in that case, do I just pretend it didn't happen? well no, this isn't cool and even though I expect it to continue - it's sort of just who he is - I'd get resentful if I held it in.
so what's the best option? one that makes it known that I don't appreciate this behavior but that I'm not going to get upset over it either. so I just said "hey! when I text you and ask how you're doing and if you want to hang out, and you reply back a day later saying you joined a gym, that's not ok by me. not mad, but dude... no. so much no to that."
simple, direct, assertive. I'm proud of that, especially proud of how I was able to get over myself and not wallow in my immediate response of hurt and victimization. this isn't about me; I'm not responsible for how other people behave. IDK how he'll respond or if he'll respond, and that's not the point. I said what I wanted to say, and how I wanted to say it. you have no idea how hard that is for me.
