For the first birthday of my best friend's daughter, they rented a couple picnic tables at a park. Had a lake and a playground attached to it. He bought plates and cups, half a dozen 12 packs of soda, and 10 cheap pizzas from Little Caesars. Everyone else brought some other kind of food like chips, cookies, finger food sandwiches, etc. Ended up spending around $300-$400 but they did get to keep all the leftover food as well. I think I would flip my shit over $1k.

But as a SoCal kid, I can tell you, taking your kid to Disney, Universal, or shit even Knott's for their birthday gets you into top tier awesome territory.

At 1 year old, taking him down the road to the park or to Disney World is going to be about the same level of happy. Playing Peek-A-Boo also same level of happy!

5 kids here. We have never spent more than $200 on a birthday for any of our kids including gifts. I can't even fathom spending that kind of money. They are just as happy at 10 if you buy them a bike from walmart as they would be spending a day at the amusement park. Kids can have good memories without having to drop massive amounts of money on them.

Yep, but you can make a very young child happy moment to moment pretty damn cheaply.
Save dropping the cash for things they'll remember.

You can entertain young children for hours with cardboard boxes. As they get older, you simply increase the size of the box. Take a couple washer/dryer/refrigerator boxes, cut doors/windows, create makeshift city in backyard. Lasts for days and works for anything from playing house to cops and robbers.

Absolutely loved going to the grandparents' house and doing that as a kid. My grandfather did work for Maytag though, so we had tons of boxes.

Boxes were the shit. We moved right after I turned 4, had an epic box fort in the basement. One of my only memories from that first house was of my friends destroying my fort at my 4th birthday party.

I'm not sure really but I think Ksandra has passes to Disney anyway due to proximity, so it probably didn't cost that much for them to go. My boyfriend and I have passes to Disney (on the other side of the country, mind you) and the only thing it costs us is gas because we'll usually brown bag a few sandwiches. So the Disney thing I can understand, at least from that perspective.

My kids have always had fairly inexpensive birthday parties. I'm in the cake and ice cream camp, personally, though I definitely can see how $1000 can be spent on a birthday party with today's costs. First birthday though, sadly, is never about the kids, it's about the parents. And a lot of parents feel obligated to make it special even though they know their kid won't remember, just so they can cherish that milestone for themselves. It's maybe kind of silly to some who don't have kids.
