I don't see the harm in conjecture when this thread is obviously so productive otherwise. If it isn't true, maybe it would still motivate people to get out there and get it done.

but the conjecture is dead now, we've all seen this "theory" be horribly debunked, at the cost of tens of hours of probably hundreds of thousands of players lol...I'm with Sath on this one, however with less coarse language lol.
edit: i guess "we" is a bad word....so "most people with ANY analytical skill whatsoever".
FFXIxample: Velosareon: 1/3 chance to drop what you need right? no, took me 12 tries to get my attestation....long story short, SE LOOOOOOVES RNG bro. good luck with your atma grind everyone.....
on a secondary note, back to OP topic, has anyone put together a list of which books upgrade what/how much of each stat for each weapon? I was super pissed after I bought the 2nd accuracy book for Curtana and it was only for 1 accuracy, which the 1st book was for 2....PIIIIISSSED lol
I mean conjecture over the possibility of anything that might affect the drop rate, not specifically this line of thought, the order posted, or the exact time frames described. At least its more constructive than throwing up our hands and claiming lolrng, no discussions ever.
"constructive" implies that it works, it's extremely destructive for the folks (most lol) that it's not working for, because it's not working. destructive in that people build up hope, only to have it shattered even more after 3-4 more hours of farming lol.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say http://ffxidb.com/zones/134/velosareon none of those drops have a 1/12 chance so your anecdote doesnt really mean anything (shocking)
Anyone know of a site that is tracking locations for mobs for books yet?
About to grind my 100 mobs, would be nice to have some <pos> about where to go.
Just type the name of the monster into xivdb.
If you needed the atma in the zone anyway, no time was wasted.
Does anyone know if you can have two Atma weapons at once (i.e. turn in for the 2nd before you're done with your first)? I'm 5/12 toward my 2nd one, and these atmas are such space eaters.
Now you're just nitpicking semantics. Constructive in the sense of adding anything to the conversation beyond a whole lot of nope. Also if people want to throw themselves at this at such a destructive pace, the onus is on them. We've got at least a few more months before this even would 'matter' to most people (i.e. the weapon becomes same ilvl as soldiery / tidal weapons). As Raldo said as well, if you needed the atma from the zone anyway no time was actually wasted.
Again: This 'theory' is mostly disproven, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that may affect the drop rate. I'm simply advocating providing information on our experiences. If shit is RNG, its RNG, but at least there would be information.
i never said the time was a waste i don't think, just that the "theory" was not sound and is misguiding people.
and i don't disagree that there may be something that changes drop rate, but the time/location theory is impractical and has direct evidence against it, and only anecdotal evidence supporting it. in my personal experience i get more effect from atma farming after i take a break, same with the wife lol, she gets one really fast after she logs in, then farms for a while with no drops lol, same with me.
Its natural for us to look for patterns even if there aren't any. 12 Atma, 12 hours. I even wondered if there might be a correlation between that when I first saw the number but I also thought that would be a -terrible- idea considering how it could lead people feeling like they absolutely to be in the zone at that time / farm the most efficiently. I figured the order of "bonus times" might reflect zodiac progression though ( Ram > Bull > Twins > Crab > Lion > Maiden > Scales > Scorpio > Archer > Goat > Water-Bearer > Fish).
I did most of my farming while watching TV, or if I wanted to be more aggressive in farming, 'get at least one a day and then you can play something else'. Or whenever there wasn't enough time to do a dungeon or something more productive, I'd putz around in a few fates.
I don't particularly think there is a pattern anymore, but I'm open to the possibility.
edit: added in my farming routine
Not quite. For the sch determination book, I had to do Zanr'ak Pugilist. XIVDB listed 12 spawn, but they didn't count, even though the name was spelled properly. I had to find one specific one and kill it 10 times. The one I killed wasn't listed on XIVDB. Glitch? Possibly.
Most likely answer is I can't read and was killing the wrong mob. But that's why I was asking.
XIVDB can be thrown off if mobs are in FATES as well. This can work to your advantage though if you know where the fates with them spawn: i.e. WHM mind book needs Giant Loggers in Coerthas, the FATE "Turn Off Your Hearthlight" has a bunch that spawn and count towards your book.
I know i had more luck with atma drops once i learned that you can leave a sync'd fate and still get credit (had never tried it before atma's, assumed it wouldn't work, etc), 2 in 16 hours or w/e staying through completion of fates, then i leaarned that tidbit, 10 in like 10 or maybe 12 hours total, but i was getting credit for easily twice as many fates, so i was at least doubling my chances. if people don't believe it btw, i got 2 atma's doing just that, i would already be at the next fate and the previous would complete and the atma would drop to me.../excitement.
Just because there is no harm or no time wasted doesn't mean you don't look retarded for discussing it.
Evidence that isn't acquired in a controlled and calibrated manner and sample sets of double digits cannot be called "collecting data". Making decisions based on such trivial shit is just confirmation bias. If you willingly fall into such a bias with people all around you warning you that you're doing it, you're a fool.
I mean, yes, you're right. No time wasted. Always helpful to identify people whose contributions to rational discussions can't be trusted though.
lol, i was saying exactly what the atma discussion is about, the chance of drop may be 5% (or in Valesoreon's case 33.33% chance), but you could still go 100 fates instead of the statistical 20 (or 12, instead of the statistical 3), or you could 1 shot it...statistics and drop rates man, really no need to reach into the witchcraft and superstition grabbag to try to explain something that makes perfect sense (albeit can be frustrating)
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn if you think I'm retarded or a fool. I thought this thread is for discussion and dissemination of atma-related information? Heaven forbid a discussion actually be held. If you want it to just be a picture gallery for all the shiny weapons people have been getting, maybe the topic should be refocused.
Also note I never "made a decision" about the 'theory' one way or another. I'd rather believe a possibility of some kind exists though, since the alternative is demotivating and infinitely more boring.
