I should expand. I feel like all these posts about how we should be "educated" about how it will not happen here served to stigmatize people actually being concerned, which may have served to international community not doing all that it could.

We made a hashtag campaign about 100 kidnapped girls, but we couldn't make a hashtag campaign about 100 people having the deadliest virus in the world which had the potential to spread?

And now we're doing the same thing for here.

Thanks. You just answered my question.

You have no excuse. You're just an idiot. The reason it spread had very little, if anything, to do with a lack of concern and most everything to do with paranoid citizens and natural distrust of medical professionals.

If you look back at the posts from most of us trained in epidemiology I don't think you'll see one that says "hey no cause for concern".

Why you continue to demonstrate your stupidity so blatantly escapes me.

It got massive discussion about sending fucking SEAL teams to find and rescue the girls. You don't think it would have served to have a conversation about sending a few hundred troops to contain the virus?

Instead we get Michelle Obama dancing with fucking turnips.

From my understanding, doesn't the flu kill more people per year?

    Actually simple google search:

    http://archives.microbeworld.org/know/deadliest.aspx

With that kind of death rate, Ebola would be the deadliest microbe of all if it was more common. Fortunately, infections by this virus are pretty rare. There have only been seven outbreaks in humans. It has killed just over 800 people since the first outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly called Zaire) in 1976.
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV causes the disease we know as AIDS. AIDS is a pandemic—a disease outbreak that is happening all over the world. In 2000 alone, 3,000,000 people died of AIDS. Since the AIDS pandemic began around 1985, almost 22,000,000 people have died from the disease. Right now, HIV infects more than 36,000,000 people across the world, so that death toll will definitely get a lot bigger over the next several years.
Should we be concerned? Sure, you should also be concerned you'll get leprosy, or that someone will crash into you on the way home from work and kill you, or that you'll be eaten by ants in your sleep.

And once again I'll repeat. I'm not talking about concern for ourselves, I'm talking about for Africa. I fucking forgot that empathy doesn't exist on the internet though.

    Same in Kansas.

Edit: And Maz, you're still an idiot. Nobody said they don't have sympathy for Africa.

Of the things to be concerned about in Africa, I'm not sure that Ebola cracks the top 3 or 5.

Who's going to do that, though? There's no money in it, publicity wouldn't be too crazy, our president isn't up for reelection, and you want this to be handled by some kind of social/charity campaign? Man, I'm betting that'd be a disaster. I don't think the really good organizers would even want to get into that. Trying to contain and treat an infectious disease with very little money, poorly trained help, and little security of additional funding sounds horrible.

It really sucks that things don't get done without some kind of gain, even if it's right thing to do, but that's life

Outside of a billionaire philanthropist taking the reigns I don't think it'll get done. In fact, I don't have any more info about this than the thread has posted but I do know there are many billionaire investors/entrepreneurs/etc that commit a lot of their time and money to tackling big world problems... the fact that nobody has done it with ebola is telling me it isn't that HUGE of a deal and it'll get itself sorted by the means already in place
