I guess the question becomes is this Stephen the character or Stephen the comedian?

I would be surprised if they want him to keep the character in their 11:30 slot. They probably want to avoid a strong political slant in that hour, that's going to turn a lot of people off.

Thats just asking to fail I think..."hey we know you got big at this being a comedic politician, but you have to drop that, keep up the comedy"

I hope the writing will be as witty as it is on colbert report. I hate late night talk shows because the bits just seem really forced. I'm actually really sad, gunna miss his faux-conservative talk

I'm actually okay with this. I was pretty bummed to hear about Letterman's retirement but it makes sense to bring in the younger guys to get the younger demographic watching late night television.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Man, the Letterman/Leno adversarial rivalry has been bitter at times. Will be weird seeing Fallon go up against Colbert given their relationship.

Letterman/Leno was bitter because Letterman was slotted after Carson on NBC and then NBC didn't give him the job when Carson retired.

I'm not, after 9 years of satire, I kind of had enough. The show isn't without its merits though, I've had many good laughs, but I've mostly had to force myself to watch the show most times.

Rush Limbaugh called Stephen Colbert's Late Show promotion a declaration of "war on the heartland of America," notes Talking Points Memo, summing up the communal dread of mainstream media-hating conservatives. The fact that CBS rewarded the man behind "Stephen Colbert," his right-wing news anchor character on The Colbert Report, with the prized late night seat is a sign that the media is fully embracing liberal intolerance and going after the right with full force. Also, note several on the right, he probably won't even be funny.

Leading the pack was Rush Limbaugh, who on his radio show described CBS' assault on American values. "No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatives," Limbaugh noted. "Now it’s just wide-out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny and a redefinition of what is comedy."

Ben Shapiro, editor-at-large for Breitbart, wrote an essay for Truth Revolt comparing Colbert's routine to actual blackface. "This routine, in which Colbert plays at conservatism in order to portray it as unendingly ugly, should be labeled for what it is: vile political blackface," he writes. The actual term is "Conservativeface," which involves acting like "an idiotic, racist, sexist, bigoted, brutal conservative. He out-Archie Bunkers Archie Bunker." The best part of Shapiro's piece is that he refers to blackface in the past tense — it "was used to portray demeaning and horrifying stereotypes of blacks" — while arguing that conservative bias is alive and well today, at the hands at intolerant liberals. In other words, Colbert mocking incidents of actual racism within your ideology is as bad as actual racism.

But not everyone was indignant. Scott Baker, editor-in-chief of The Blaze, brought up a fair point: "If he's his real self, we don't know what that's really like." Meaning, Colbert's probably a lib, but how he'll taunt conservatives is up in the air. Others are hoping the show will just flop. Salon compiled a list of conservative radio hosts and writers pointing out that Colbert is "low-rated" and not even funny. "What's funny is that Colbert's schtick is only funny when he can act a part to mock conservatives," tweeted John Green, web editor of the Washington Examiner. "Good luck, bro." Good luck indeed, Colbert. The #tcot definitely won't be watching.
    Stay classy Republicans.

If there was an actual war everytime Republicans claimed there was a "war on __________" we'd all be dead.

The worst part about this news is that we'll never see the end of his 435 part series "Better know a district."

I'm looking forward to this. Colbert has a magnetic personality and will draw a good audience especially in our demographic and younger. He will be good for late night because he's a home grown South Carolinian and will also draw to the demographic that that brings with it. Being out of character and himself will be good fit because he's one of the strongest and quickest interviewers on television. He's so fast with his retorts and still pulls off that intelligent persona... Plus the Christian thing. He caters to everyone.

He'll be great against Fallon given their relationship and because Fallon has the talent and Colbert the personality and humor.

I personally have never liked Fallon, especially in his SNL days. The fact that he would always break character and look directly at the camera while laughing during sketches used to make me so angry. I might just be a theatre snob (because honestly my old theatre directors would have slaughtered anyone who did that shit) but I just disliked him from the beginning.
