1 and 2 flowed together. But 3 is where shit started...to be fair though, nothing was retconned. Everything was just cliched away; Jill disappeared between 2/3, only to reappear movies later with a spider on her chest for no reason leading an umbrella force. Nothing came of the doctor and his daughter from 2, and all those people you fell in love with from 1-3? They were most likely clones the whole time, as revealed in movie...5? The list goes on, which is why you don't worry about it and just go with it. This last movie was probably the weakest of the sequels, but they also had to make a real ending so I'll give them a pass.
Er sorry kind of mixed 1 and 2 up with how they flowed together. They retconned the whole origin of the virus thing and characters involved and the outbreak itself
In 2 Dr. Charles Ashford created the T-virus because his daughter Angela had some kind of disease that made her unable to walk without crutches. He was murdered during the outbreak by Major Cain. Also from 1 the outbreak clearly wasn't started by Umbrella but by instead by Matt the environmental terrorist. Also Alice starts regaining memories of before she woke up in the mansion including having met up with Matt's sis.
In the latest film thru flashbacks we get Dr. James Marcus created the T-Virus because his daughter Alicia had some weird aging disease and Whesker kills him before events of the first film. It shows that the whole zombie apocalypse was intentionally caused by Umbrella and they talk about how Alice doesn't have any memories of before she woke up in the mansion because she had been created.
They purposely play loose with the clone thing in order to explain away any inconsistencies there are between movies.
How does that explain anything though? How does that explain how events and people in events that happened in the movie that she wasn't even in the scene for not happening/being different? It's not like she was having fake flashbacks of implanted memories this was us the audience seeing things as they happened
No... it's literally not even close and that's a pretty exaggerated statement. The end of the 3rd movie showed all the Alice clones, they used that in the next movie to attack a base. The end of the 4th movie showed all of them on the boat about to face Umbrella, it showed that and explained some of it and at least left ideas open to what happened to Chris and Claire. The ending of Retribution and the entire movie pretty much, was completely invalidated. Why in the hell did Wesker send a strike team to retrieve Alice when he could have just blown the base up and killed her and any opposition. Why would he even want to blow the base up if he is still working for Umbrella and the Red Queen was under his control? They literally made the previous movie make 0 sense at all lol. If they intended to have people read between the lines and guess that all the major characters are dead except Alice, thats pretty crummy. It's not even sub characters like K-mart, its Jill who was my favorite!
Yes, they used the clones to attack the base with her new powers, and subsequently all the clones died and Alice lost her new powers 15min into the next movie. At the end they end it on the boat, after which they all get blown up and Alice wakes up underground ready to start another movie without finishing the last movies references. This movie, the 5th one, is where we learn Carlos, Michelle Rodriguezs character, and a lot of others are clone stocks for umbrella, which also means the originals we knew from films 1-3 were either clones as well, or most were clones with some being added as stock after the outbreak; either way shitty writing but we're running with it. That movie ends at white house, and next begins with white house destroyed and apparently only like 4k humans alive. They leave us to assume pretty heavily that every one with Alice at this point is dead, since she awakens in the rubble of the WH like she just got done fighting. Every opening starting with the 3rd movie serves to both explain, and do away with, the ending of the previous one for obvious reasons.
As for memories, what memories are you talking about? Alice is a clone who went rogue, nothing more. She was wanted cause she bonded with the T virus perfectly and was a super human, while OG Alice was old and in stasis. Other clones apparently didn't bond with virus like rebel Alice did, as shown in movie 3.
I didn't mention anything about memories, so not sure what you're referring to. I said why did Wesker bother sending troops to the undersea base to help Alice escape when he was in league with Umbrella and the Red Queen was under his control. It makes no sense and they didn't even explain why the Red Queen was calling him a traitor, why Wesker didn't just kill Alice instead of sending her to that base or why he wanted to blow up such a costly base like that for almost no reason. It's like they planned one story and just completely scrapped it without anything to explain it.
Dasvo asked, and I agree with you. I imagine the secret to their success is how little you need to know about the previous entries.
Wesker turning coat constantly probably has to do with umbrella wanting to purge the world. Idk, I don't want to explain bad writing anymore lol.
As far as the memories from 1... yes they were all clones and they could have been fake memories. That would've been cool. Wouldn't have been great given the fact those memories were heavily implied to actually have happened and now we are left wondering who in umbrella was feeding intel to Matt's sister and why the fuck Umbrella put those memories in this clone but it is possibly if not the most sensical. But them stating she had no memories before she woke up real or otherwise only really works if we make the giant leap of the Alice from 1 is not the same clone as later ones. Still that's less egregious than the names and deaths and conditions of the characters we actually saw as an audience that she wasn't there for happening differently
Alice from 1 is same Alice throughout series. Umbrella ultimately wanted the culling of the human population, and however that came about, they got it. I think that's ultimately all that matters.
That's what I mean. If Alice is the same Alice thru all of them there are clear contradictions... or well more contradictions. But I suppose they didn't really expect us to care about the finer details from over a decade ago. Or more likely if you are still watching at this point you are turning your brain off somewhat and viewing them as standalones that sort of progress the story from previous
There isn't though, everything is explained with the ambiguous"umbrella orchestrated it all to genocide the human race". They 4D chess the fuck out of the world and almost won. It's lame, but that's what we get for giving these people money for now 6 movies.
Um that doesn't explain how we the audience are told different people invented the virus, for a different daughter with a different disease and died at totally different times. Or the going from having some memories albeit it possibly fake to having none.
I'd probably have to watch them all in a row to be sure (and let me tell you how likely that is to happen..), but I don't think all the problems are retcons.
All they said was Alice was a clone and put in the mansion. They didn't specify a time though, so she could have been cloned and living in the mansion for two years before the events of the first film. As far as the plan to wipe out humanity, when they capture Alice at the end of 1, don't they say something like, "let's reopen the hive.", which could have preceded the plans to infect the world. Maybe they found out what the T-virus could do in that incident and went from there.
I had completely forgotten about the reason for the T-virus in 2, so I've got nothing about that change.
Then again, these are already probably too many mental gymnastics for a franchise which, like dasva said, requires turning off your brain at this point.
They reopen the hive in 2 because they want to "know what the hell went on down there". Of course, in doing so, Raccoon City gets infected. The game had it spreading by rats in the sewers, but this is how the movies do it leading up to the nuclear containment.
If it seems I know a little too much about this, let me reiterate I binged them all leading up to the new movie. Their ridiculousness is fresh in my mind.
The easiest way to reconcile the movies is to realize they retcon each one to "wipe the slate" for the next one.
