Graphics card possibly dead

So a few days ago i suddenly started getting BSOD with the error "Attempt to reset display device failed after timeout" or at least something close to that. Google revealed that error indicates a problem with the display driver, the graphics card, or both. I have tried updating to the latest drivers, going back to the drivers the card shipped with, and even reverting to the drivers i started with. During the course of this the problem escalated to the point where the pc will no longer load windows without the card being disabled in device manager.

So the card is looking pretty dead, but i'm hoping you guys might have some other options for me to explore before i commit to a new card. The card is an evga gtx 470 and i'm running 64 bit windows 7.

Failing that, if you guys could advise me on buying a new card or link me some buying guides, i'd appreciate it. Thanks.

What's your budget? The card does sound indeed it's on its way out, similar problem happened to my laptop.

There's really not much option I don't think but to buy a new one. If your CPU is a i3/i5/i7 3xxx variant you could stick it on HD4000 for a bit, but I doubt you'd be happy with that.

A nvidia 750 GTX Ti variant is a nice budget/price for performance these days if you're not the type of person to stick games on uber-max settings.

Well if I have to get a new card money's not too much of an issue. Currently have an I7 cpu.

Yeah, it does sound like your gfx hardware is kicking the bitbucket, especially since it is a number of years old. There is a tiny chance it could be an ailing powersupply not being able to keep power to the card. Without being able to put the card in another computer, you won't be 100% certain, but you're really damn close as is.

I'd imagine the rest of your system is from the same era, so you may need to be careful in making sure your motherboard and powersupply can support a newer/stronger card, and has the power cables for it.
