If it was conceived from the start it could have worked. If they were willing to blow up Vulcan, a new crew member could have been worked in. But we're past that and making this universes Sulu gay is pretty much the shortest distance between two points.

If you think it'a remotely similar you're massively misunderstanding and misrepresenting the issues with GB and I'm not derailing this thread to explain it further as the GB thread being a hot mess is already enough. This. I'm not fine with it either, the only thing I agree with is that if they're determined to do it, making it Sulu is the least terrible way to do it.

And big fat ditto on these not being the same thing at all; assuming any scene revealing Sulu to be gay isn't acted as horribly as the stuff we've seen from the new Ghostbusters.

He'll probably end up waking up in a bed with some random dude in a 10 second scene, and that'll be the end of it.

Exactly.

I actually like that its a previously established character who is gay because the idea is that its not abnormal and its not something you have to explicitly spell out. It was not an issue in the Trek world so you don't find out until you see it happen. That's how it should be in real life too, but obviously its not. I'm okay with this.

So I was trying to think of what else I'd seen him in and remembered, he was in the Fright Night remake. Which I thought was pretty decent overall, especially his role.

Yeah, I knew that one, and Odd Thomas which was really good. Pretty sure Fright Night was the only thing I'd seen him in but forgotten about. And others have mentioned all his recent mainstream movies other than that one so thought I'd mention it.

He's also got several in the completed/post-production stages listed on imdb, so this won't be his last film.
