    Deactivate Internet Explorer 64bits

Ok this is making me rage

Most PCs at work are now Windows 7 x64bit, but sadly we are stuck with 2 internet explorer 32 and 64bits

Some websites are not working correctly in the 64bits version, and the users keep opening the 64 one by mistake.

For some sites i made a shortcut that it will launch Internet explorer from the Program Files X86 aka 32bits.

But sadly I cannot do that for everywebiste,

So my question is there a way to deactivate the 64 bits version of IE9 or just make sure that it ALWAYS open the 32bits one.

(I still use IE9 because some websites require the lolactiveX and some websites are not compatible with IE10 or 11)

    Thanks

Can't you uninstall the 64 bit version?

You can't see it under the normal uninstall screen, but you can see it under the "installed updates" sub-menu.

Does it choose which one to open on its own, or are the users actually going out of their way to find and click the x64 version? Win7's default IE in the taskbar should be the x86 one, unless they got rid of it for whatever reason or it actually does link to the x64 one. There could also be some compatibility mode that isn't getting turned on, since they are different browsers.

I would imagine setting the one you want as default and maybe just removing the shortcut from the other, but sounds like it's not that simple, and the activex used might be too weird/old for compatibility modes in the higher IEs to work. I haven't used IE9 in forever, and IE at school is at 10 I think and I have 11 on my machines, so I don't have access to a machine with it to fiddle with lol.

I don't see the X64 in the install updates

All i see is the Internet explorer 9

Also yes the taskbar one opens the 32bits, the problem is a migration problem from us

They had Windows XP first and they had internet shortcut on the desktop so now the link says c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Which was fine for XP but now on Win7X64 that link points to the X64 version

Use a user GPO to run a script on logon that removes the shortcut?

PsExec is another way to do it.

You can use this tool to basically execute a batch file locally that will run on all active computers.

What if you recreate the shortcut? Delete the old one, open to the proper website in the 32 bit version, then simply file > send shortcut to desktop. Would that mostly resolve it?

There might be a sneaky way to do it. Try to find a way to redirect access to the folder c:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\ from c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ . Like a symbolic link.

After a quick search, I found this:: http://windows7themes.net/en-us/wind...ymbolic-links/ Try it on a disposable system since you're screwing with such an integral part of windows (fucking IE).

    del *internet* /f /q
    del *IE* /f /q

Or God forbid we take a more normal approach and just send out a mass email telling them theyre idiots as all users need to be told now and then.
