About the only things kept from 1.0:
- Background Story
- Art Assets
- Selective Music
- Leves In Name Only
August 27. 2013. The game was built from the ground up again and re-branded. Come on. You're never going to hear Yoshi-P or any representative at SE state that FFXIV is in it's 4th Anniversary. You will hear 1st instead.
The engine, server format, UI interface was built from ground up alongside various new script algorithms. That's basically a new game. The only thing that was reused were previously coded monster textures and music. They also kept the lore from 1.0.
There are a LOT of art assets that, if not kept, were ported.
I think the vast majority of mob and gear models were ported from either 1.0 or XI, and large chunks of geography (particularly in town) were also ported. Granted, there's also a lot of new geography, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the net majority of art assets in this game were ported, not created from scratch.
The battle engine is also very different, but to be honest, 1.0 <-> 1.23 <-> 2.0 are all completely different battle systems. As far as jobs/classes go, 2.0 has MUCH more in common with 1.23 than 1.23 does with 1.0.
Maybe my memory is failing me but wasn't the big combat overhaul 1.18?
The one that scrapped all the original skills for the new ones.
Yeah, it was around there. I'm just taking 1.23 (final pre-ARR update) as the culmination of "Yoshida 1.0", which had more in common with ARR than it did with "Tanaka 1.0" (from a gameplay standpoint).
iirc, 1.18 was auto-attack, 1.20/1.21? was combo system
1.20 I believe was action revamp, 1.21 was jobs + AV/CC. Ifrit and Darkhold were already in the game before 1.20 (1.19? 1.18?), and I think Moogle was added in 1.20?
1.18:
removed stamina
removed AOE toggle
minor action revamp
added autoattack
1.20:
removed action points
widespread action revamp
added combos
1.21:
added jobs
1.20 is the patch I'm thinking of then.
How did we AoE heal between 1.18 and 1.20 tho? Was a dedicated AoE cure part of the "minor action revamp"?
(wow my memory sucks)
Yeah I believe Curaga (AoE Cure) was added to Conjurer when they changed THM to not have Sacrifice.
"Minor action revamp" added Curaga/II and Raise II/III as CNJ-specific spells, as part of the movement toward class identity.
THM still had Sacrifice line until 1.20, though.
I miss those days.
Unbalanced, broken, endlessly customizable.
It wasn't appropriate or sustainable for a long term MMO, but goddamn it was fun mixing and matching all the skills across all the classes to do some really ingenious stuff. I'm just disappointed with the baby with the bathwater approach the development started to take from then on.
Tanking Great Buffalo on Archer because Emulate was broken as shit, Sacrifice on myself to heal, doing the most bursty damage with Multishot so nobody could take it off me anyways. THM AoE tanking Dodore and that one Goblin with his buddies. Everyone having Sentinel. Good times.
We used to make everyone have it set for Ifrit and didn't invite those who didn't have it unlocked.
I used to solo Dodore and Haughtplox all the time as THM, shit was so much fun
2.0 is great, but now I miss 1.0 lol
The three things I miss most from pre-1.18:
1) broken ass THM- best healer of all time, amazing soloer, respectable deeps, and (for a short time) best tank until Firm Conviction nerf
2) Sacrifice III (on any class)
3) 1.0 shield mechanics- I really enjoyed them and found it to be a more unique and engaging playstyle
Things I don't miss: PLD being 100% useless. Also Fists abilities draining MP.
I didn't play a lot pre-1.21 so I missed out on a lot of the cross-class shenanigans.
PLD was far from useless before they changed shield mechanics. In fact, it was almost the reverse; with the right shield, PLD rarely took damage at all.
Speed runs all day every day made it pretty well redundant how little damage a PLD took because Steel Cyclone was retarded (and having to level up your shield skill separately was some buuuuuuuuuullllllshiiiiiiiittt). The only thing anyone ever sort of wanted PLD for was Darnus HM.
