Friend of mine got engaged after 6 months, married 10 months afterwards. We all said he was insane and tried to talk him out. Doesn't help that he was Italian and married into an Armenain family.

I am American and I think it's crazy. I hear commercials on the radio all the time where this chick is like "oh my god we've been together 8 months you're totally buying me an engagement ring, right?" Every time I hear it I roll my eyes, hard. Not to mention her voice is like the most annoying fucking thing ever, but that's beside the point.

Been with my man nearly 2 years, and we were talking for six months before that. While we've lightly talked about the possibility that marriage might be in our future, neither of us is in any hurry. I assume he'll want his PhD finished (and my BS) before that's even a blip on our radars. And after one rushed and failed marriage, I'm completely okay with that.

It can work, but it has to be for the right reasons. Appeasing the parents is definitely not the right reason.
