    Any Naval Warfare fans/buffs?

I have a question my google-fu isn't able to answer so far.

Anyone know how to convert a ship's size/tonnage/typical nautical measurement into a weight measurement? For instance, if this link says that the Missouri displaced 58,000 tons fully manned and fueled, etc, how do I know how much that weighs out of the water? Like if you could just pick it up out of the water and place it on a scale on land.

I'm aware that ships aren't typically measured this way, I'm just engaging in a theoretical exercise, but don't know how to proceed.

    Thanks for any insight.

the actual manning and ordnance tonnage will be difficult as fuck; there's NO way to know the weight of people on board, and even with having an idea of how much ordnance she carried, that'd be a rough estimate, at best. Best effort would be going to the loaded displacement and determining the density of said water, and going from there. Good luck, rofl

Doesn't have to be anywhere near specific. A ballpark (within a couple hundred thousand pounds) would be more than sufficient. For instance, the space shuttle weighs 4.5 million pounds fully loaded, with fuel. I figure a battleship or aircraft carrier fully loaded has to weigh more than that, although a third of the space shuttle's weight is fuel. I mean, an aircraft carrier has 5,000 people on it and it is, well, freaking huge. I'm just trying to get a rough comparison. Like the space shuttle is 185 feet long and an aircraft carrier is 1100 feet long.

5000 people alone plus their respective wardrobes on board would be 1-1.5mil pounds alone.

You're fucked. Have fun, though. while displacement may be an unclassed thing to google up, unless you know formulas and whatnot, i doubt you're going to be able to find the weight of the carrier pre-launch.

Well it is for my own personal fun, not like I have a school project dependent on it or anything. My biggest problem is the variables. Like, an aircraft carrier has a desalination plant that can produce enough water for a small city every day. How much water to they actually have on board though? Is it an on-demand system? Probably, but they have to have on board storage in case the system takes damage from battle, they need to have water while it is restored. Do they keep 5,000 gallons on hand? 50,000?

Good fun. If anyone has ideas on how to figure this out, chime in.

See, that info is classified. Water is used for several different things on board. Aaaaaand, that's as far as i'm going.

it's been forever since i covered buoyancy in school, so i know this is wrong but i don't remember why: i thought displacement would be the approximate weight?

If a boat weighs more than its displacement, it's no longer floating. Fine for a submarine, bad for a carrier.

If you're looking at a typical ship, you can use displacement as an approximate weight, though as Abandon said that weight can vary considerably depending on how it's laden.

If you can find a copy of Jane's Fighting Ships, that could help maybe, it's been a while since I looked at it, so I kind of forget what they covered in there.
