Needing a new pair of black dress shoes and not sure what to get. Last few pairs have been Rockports. Last pair was these black Rockports. Returned them after a few weeks due to poor quality.

I've been looking at wingtips for the most part. $85-$125 seems to be the rate for a decent pair. $200+ for higher quality. What style black dress shoes does BG prefer?

I currently have a pair of Allen Edmonds that are my typical go-to black dress shoes. I also have a dark gray pair of Magnanni that I wear with gray slacks. Both pairs have gotten me multiple compliments, but they'll run $200+ easily. Get some leather-soled shoes and take care of the tops. They'll eventually come out cheaper than running through a bunch of shitty pairs.

What sort of work? For IT I usually just rock boat shoes, but not sure how well they go with dress pants. I wear jeans to work every day, bonuses of being in IT I suppose lol.

I sell insurance. My recent brown boots/shoes I bought for work are Rockports and look great as a casual & semi professional look. Have received compliments on them, but I definitely need some stellar black shoes. I was reading about the Allen Edmonds and everyone that owns them loves them. Instead of spending $125-$175 on Johnston & Murphy's it seems like a smart move to get the AE's. I can't put out big money right this minute, but it would be a possibility in a few months. I've also read Cole Haans are good shoes, but them, J&M, and Bostonian quality has went downhill recently. I've never paid more than $85 for dress shoes. I think it's time to step it up.

I bought a few pairs of Mephistos about 6 years ago. Best shoe purchases I've ever made. Still just as comfortable as the day I got them and look almost as good.
