    Cold Sores

Looking for some remedy ideas. To be clear, I'm not talking about the fever blister type sores you get on your lips, but rather the lesions that can appear on the gums and interior of the mouth. I know this is caused by a type of the herpes virus (not the STD kind), and I've had these off and on from childhood to present day. Usually, I rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash or peroxide twice a day, and they disappear in about 3-4 days. I've learned to deal with them as necessary nuisances. The real problem is that every so often, one of these fuckers will appear underneath or on the sides of my tongue. This makes my life Hell. Eating is constantly painful, and I have to be very careful and make myself sound much different to even speak without causing pain. When these happen, the 3-4 days of mouthwash just doesn't cut it. Do any of our BG medical professionals *cough* know of any remedies to get rid of these faster, or at least ease the pain enough so that I don't have to go through a few days of misery?

I use Lysine pills to stop the sores. Usually, there is a spot in my mouth that tingles or itches before I am about to get a cold sore or canker sore. If I take a Lysine pill right when I feel that, it goes away before forming into a sore. You can buy Lysine pills off the shelf just about anywhere medications are sold.

If I don't get it under control in time, I use hydrogen peroxide to rinse my mouth as well as taking the Lysine.

If it's in the inside of your mouth or lips, it's not cold sores. It's canker sores, and they're not caused by herpes simplex I. They're also not contagious, unlike cold sores.

When I was a kid, my mom would have me put a piece of pickling salt on the sore to kind of dry it out. Honestly have no idea if it healed any faster than without. My memories of 25 years ago are kind of foggy with the details.

When I was younger, my mother would give us a piece of an aloe plant to rub on the canker.

Now-a-days, I'll mix salt in warm/hot water and swish it around on the sore until it stops hurting. After a day or two, they'll usually clear up.
I don't really have any remedies for prevention.

plain vodka probably would work. Don't get anything mixed or flavored. Just alcohol.

I used to get ulcers which sound similar to what you say are cold sores. They'd come out of nowhere and be dead annoying when eating. The best thing I ever did was have my wisdom teeth took out as the gum around them kept getting infected and possibly generating the ulcers. I've not had an ulcer in more than 10 years since.

Cold sores only appear outside the mouth, on the skin.

Canker sores are what OP has.

I get them sometimes, I just have to wait for them to go away. Avoid rigid and acidic foods for a while. Foods with sugars on them (like candies or muffin tops) usually irritate mine more too.

Here's some treatments, I've never used any of them.

Aphthous ulcers. If you see a doc you can get an Rx med, probably something like triamcinolone (shit's situational) to apply to it, or if you don't want to see a doctor, get some zinc lozenges.

They basically suck for a few days until they go away, depending on where they are in the mouth. I've used Orajel on them, it basically covers the sore and creates this "seal" over it to prevent food, saliva, teeth, tongue, etc. from irritating the sore. It basically works but can be annoying to use, and it doesn't heal them any faster, just keeps them from being annoying and painful.
