Amy's burritos are actually fairly healthy and tasty if you're really pressed for time or whatever. I'll have one for lunch at work every so often, since we sell them.
Your best bet, if you're hell-bent on eating frozen dinners, is to hit up the nutrition/organic section at your local grocery (or better yet, a store that specifies in it). The foods will be less processed, less salty (although usually not by much), and less full of unnecessary additives - but of course, more expensive. Still, it's your health you're gambling with if you eat a lot of frozen and nuked foods, and the best way to stay on the healthy side of that is to eat stuff like Kashi, Amy's, Annie's and other brands that have a strict focus on nutrition.
Dude probably works for Soylent.
You guys make it seem like I eat them every meal lol. I maybe eat just a few per month. I made this thread cause I thought some people do the same and share about ones they like to indulge in occasionally. Sheesh.
I too used to eat a lot of microwaved shit, for a while I ate Hot Pockets nearly every day.
Now I do still microwave some things. Now that I'm cooking more often I have to do dishes more often which I'm not entirely okay with. It's a trade off though, I guess.
I'm not championing frozen dinners. I understand not enjoying spending hours planning, buying, and preparing healthful food only because the other option is starvation. All of this I've covered in the Soylent thread (no, I don't work for them. Wouldn't mind if I did; those guys're making a lot of money as far as I can tell).
"Just throw stuff in a crockpot" doesn't really take the 5 minutes that people throw around, and I personally find that shit abhorrent at the end of a long day.
There's a disconnect between people who enjoy the majority of their meals, and those who simply don't. If you fall into the former, insulting those who fall into the latter isn't going to change anything for anyone.
I rarely do the microwave dinner deal. Sometimes I'll get those stoffer's lasagna if I am feeling lazy, but those take an hour in the oven so not exactly often.
I am a sucker for these though:
I used to get these instead:
but they are next to impossible to find them in Cali, and even places I do find them in seem to not always have them in stock.
Haha that's funny cause I just noticed those Mama Rosa's for the first time at Kroger today. Never had em but they look disgusting.
lol. I think it's 'cause my parents got them a lot. My husband never had them before and when I found some I bought it. He thinks they are "alright". So they may actually be disgusting and I was just raised to like them or something.
Now you need to try them and tell me if I am crazy or not.
marie callendar's lasagna is fantastic, and it doesn't taste much different from the microwave than baking it, but I still usually bake it
the healthy choice steamers are pretty solid if you're into the kind of flavors they offer; basically it puts the noodles and solids in a slotted basket over the sauce so they get steamed by it, pretty tasty
also totino's party pizzas mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... they are the cheapest most disgusting shit but they're fucking delicious
I used to like the Celeste, but they changed something about them a year or two ago, they aren't good anymore.
I could understand frozen dinners if they were cheap, but they're usually not. Mystery lunchmeat + cheese + bread costs the same, takes a minute to prepare, and tastes better.
Pizza rolls are pretty great, though. Gotta make 'em in the toaster oven, not the microwave.
Toaster ovens kick ass, btw. Best way to make crispy bacon, imo. Just lay the strips out on the top rack and put a catch pan on the bottom rack. Save the fat that drips off and use it for frying eggs or veggies or whatever.
convection oven onry
I do not use microwaves for cooking nor do I let myself eat unhealthy often but I will once in a blue moon cheat and make mini-tacos from Jose Ole in the oven. (pretty sure there's a quick microwave cooking option on them)
croissant crust only!
i forgot about hot pockets. i suppose they count for this. same deal; i haven't been eating them lately, but they're aight when i have no energy.
also, for the whole "oh but blahblah takes the same amount of time to prepare" i think you are misunderstanding the point of microwave food.
put food in microwave.
push buttons.
receive food.
I'd say there's two frozen dinners i've actually enjoyed eating, the first being some dishes like punjabi chhole and other spicy indian/arabic type frozen dinners. Unfortunately I don't remember the brand name, but it the back of the box is filled with (I think) arabic plus some english heating instructions. Theyre usually 2-3 dollars each from Fresh & Easy, making them both cheap AND tasty, something i found to be rare in this day and age. I will warn you though, theyre all very spicy. addictingly so, but perhaps not for the faint of tongue.
The other one is the Bertolli brand, which comes in a black and gold box. they have pretty good pasta type dishes, but unfortunatly are a bit on the pricier side. that being said, they also tend to have more food in them, so at least it's not a total rip off.
There is also the frozen meals that Fresh & Easy makes themselves, which come in metal trays that you heat in the oven. not so quick as a microwave, but fairly cheap for the amount you get, and some of them are downright tasty, like the chorizo stuffed mushrooms. those seem more geared for a family as part of a meal though.
lol wtf cock sauce?? ---------------------------------------------------------^
I like this idea. I try to bulk cook pre made meals for later too but never in such an organized way like this.
I am pretty finicky about salt so most microwave meals are too salty for me but there are some that I will pick from Marie calender's. I like to make microwave quesadillas with the pre cooked chicken breast strips made for fajitas.
Having pre cooked and sliced chicken in the freezer is a major staple for various meals that I like to make in the microwave.
I steam broccoli from the steamers packs often too and add to various quick microwave meals.
Potato in plastic wrap is a good microwave meal and quick.
My quickest & most common microwave meal would be broccoli, chicken, mozzarella/jack cheese burritos or fajita pitas with the same ingredients.
Also, Safeway has these Eating Right instant soups, Potato leek is my fav. They also have Aunti Chun brand instant noodle soup bowls like Soba that are a few grades up from your basic saltorama msg ramen and they come with fresh moist noodles even though they are in a dry food section.
I also bought a microwave rice cooker that is well worth the investment but it is annoying to clean.
Eh I'm glad I just ate..talking about food usually makes me hungry.
