Help me ID this Windows tablet

Helping a friend try to figure out what this thing is. Windows tablet, 10 inch screen, no logos. Has the following ports on the right side: full USB, full HDMI, SD card (not micro), SIM slot. Can't find a single tablet on the market with this combo of ports. Dead battery, need to figure out the model so we can find a charger for it. Can anyone ID manufacturer just from the charging/docking port? Don't have a pic of the front, will try for one later.

EDIT: Camera with a flash on the back, pic to come.

Should be a Win7 tablet, not a Win8 tablet, if that helps. Pretty sure the cert process for the Win8 tablets requires the Win8 flat-edge logo.

I'm thinking it's not a consumer model tablet, it looks like it has mounting points on either side of the ports for being placed in a kiosk stand, like for a touchscreen register.

I just received a pic of the back which has a giant Intel logo on it, friend didnt mention that before... Its looking like its an Intel prototype tablet. Any ideas on how to charge it? I'm guessing if its a concept/prototype, then the charger must be proprietary. I really wanna see this thing running now; I'm curious as hell.

So you have the actual tablet itself? Have you tried looking under the battery compartment for any labels? Or take off its cover?

That wavy windows logo means it's not win8, but could be xp, vista, or 7. Gonna assume 7 (xp was before that sort of form factor and vista wasn't really on tablets), but if you can open it up and find some dates, would help pinpoint something. Or any hardware serial or service numbers.

If you can get full front and back pictures, you might be able to using google or bing's image search for it as well.

If it's completely brandless (it'd be obvious by now) it looks like some cheap China import (clone) lol

The fact it's got HDMI, -AND- a sim slot, pretty much nails it as that. It's great they are, the China manufacturers. Cram as much (useful) shit on it as possible.

Received a pic of the back with Intel logo:

That's the only logo/marking on the tablet. You guys are definitely right about the windows logo, but the tablet doesn't 'feel' cheap/Chinese, if that makes any sense. My friend has them at his house, we'll try to open one up somehow.

Reminds me of an ipad case, but likely all plastic. I've found some tablets that almost look like it that are win7, aside from branding on the back and ports in different places, business-styled ones. Or like stig mentioned, it could be chinese. The chinese manufacturers love to use the ipad's casing since they have all the things to make them easily. With the intel logo in the middle of the back like that, it means dell, hp, lenovo, samsung, etc, probably didn't make it since they nearly always put their logos back there.

Probably a knockoff. If you can find out what kind of battery it uses (model numbers, etc), can also the machine it belongs to if nothing else back there identifies it.

If we were in year 2005, I'd agree with you, but you'd be amazed, the products coming out of China are quite convincing/well made despite these days. I won't classify them as 100% reliable, especially if some of it breaks, but other than that it's definitely competitive.

One thing I have taken note of, this is definitely a Windows 7 era device, the Windows 8 devices uses a different logo/icon.

However, on top of this, I also cannot think of a single Windows 7 tablet that would come with a screen only, it's doesn't seem to fit the trend. Most are convertibles at best. The only exception is the ones with them special detachable keyboards; are there any visible slots that'll let you attach one to it? Although I'll come clean now I've never personally examined one with one of those keyboards, I heard some are like magnets which somehow connect up ... not too sure, because if that is the scenario then there's no visible slot?

But then this points it into China territory; but as you rightfully said a prototype is also possible given the ambiguity.

EDIT: Also, no serial stickers or anything on bottom
EDIT2: Orinthia pointed out it looks like some sort of iPad. Them chinese are mad about Apple/iPads lol

You can try to take it apart to see. If it's an i5 CPU then it's a bit likely to be prototype territory (more so if i7)

EDIT3: A typical china product: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hd-Design-Jk...896741&sr=1-11 ... notice how it's logoless/plain/dull, but there's an intel sticker at least!

I very much doubt it'd use an i-series intel. The thing pictured doesn't look like it has a fan unless it's well hidden, so an i-series is probably not inside. It likely has an Atom of some kind, especially if it's a knockoff since they absolutely love that processor for everything (it's dirt cheap). But the shiny logo in the back could mean anything there... most knockoffs don't have logos or just put a sticker/some paint.

Here are some other win7 tablets that almost have the same features, to get an idea. They're all obviously branded.

Haha I wasn't sure how to search specifically for those, but seeing you post those and looking at the pics, I'm actually now very doubtful of any chance of identfying.

What's the power port look like? I'm sure any bog standard charger (one of them multi-things) will work. Aren't they quite good these days to ensure it won't automatically blow it? Back in 1999 I blew up my PS1 because I accidentally plugged in an EU charger on my JP PS1 and fried the thing ... but things have changed now, right? lol

There's likely no protection for that sort of thing, so it'd be risky to try without a little research. It's mostly a matter of getting the right connector and setting the adapter to the right polarity and voltage. And it'd especially pop if it were a knockoff, they tend to cheap out as much as possible.

That said, my google search was basic, using that back cover in an image search and putting in a few more words (windows 7 tablet sim). Found loads of similar and related pictures, which lead to websites trying to sell them or showcase them. I still laughed at how a few used that old 8 logo and how most look like an ipad.

Good call on the potential knock off/cheap parts theory. Didn't factor that in.

I'm very curious to discover what this is now.

I mean, there could be SECRETS inside! The thought of uncovering something mysterious/secretive, if it is indeed an ex-prototype, is quite exciting.

Ok, my friend was able to get the screen off by taking off the little casing on the sides of the tablet. As soon as he did though, the tablet made a beep and then vibrated for a second. He said it was very similar to how the Surface Pro has that vibration when you touch the windows button, but he couldn't localize exactly where the tablet vibrated. Not sure why it would beep and buzz when we thought battery was dead; maybe there's a special way to power it on that we can't figure out? Anyways, here's the insides. Any info to be gained from these pics?

Damn, nothing worth while comes up trying to find replacement batteries, aside from it being possibly samsung related. Searching for "dak120880" shows samsung laptop batteries, in particular the samsung ativ or series 9, but it's the wrong formfactor.

It may actually be some sample produced but never marketed lol, or like what was thought earlier, a demo/kiosk type. Interesting.

edit: might still be risky to use a universal adapter, mostly since google doesn't know of any replacement batteries of this exact type. Not sure if it would work without a battery otherwise, though it doesn't look particularly nice to remove or mess with. If you're adventurous, try stuff out.

I dont know anything about internals, can the processor be ID'd from those? dang I just realized how bad that second pic is, some of the board is cut off.

Looks like we're seeing the underside; the back panel is probably the heatsink for the cpu. You'd need to be extra careful when lifting that out, there might be more screws and things holding it on somewhere for better contact. Removing the battery might also be annoying since it doesn't look like they wanted you to replace it yourself. Maybe take some more pictures just for reference when putting it back together since there might not be a manual for it.

mother fucking hell, this is more mysterious than Flight MH370....

There's no doubt in my mind that this particular tablet is a Chinese knock-off. The connectors and wire casings look cheap, along with the bad soldering job on the battery connectors, and the masking tap holding the ribbon cables down. I know all devices use tape to hold ribbons down, usually its yellow and transparent similar to the tape used in the bottom pictures towards the bottom right corner.

Used to take a lot of tablets and phones apart when I used to be a tech at Sprint, and to me, this just looks like the work of the Chinese.

Here's something to add to the confusion: my friend has another tablet that looks like this one, but without the windows logo, which is running android. Says it was working fine till the battery died. Not sure if that lends itself to the Chinese-made theory or the prototype-theory. And the only reason I'm still entertaining prototype-theory is the claim for where these came from (slightly ridiculous).

Elpida Memory (pictured) got bought out by Micron in early 2013 and the name change took place in Feb 2014. Making this an older tablet, definitely not a prototype.

Edit: Well could be an early prototype still, just an unreleased model like somebody mentioned earlier.

I personally love the prototype theory rather than a China produced product. I can't argue against jinkazama's input, he's the guy with full experience here. I'm just an enthusiast lol, I don't even own a tablet. I'm well versed in them in that for some reason I keep fixing people's tablets/phones, but I don't know anything about it really honest! ahaha

Just out of curiousity, where did it come from? I mean, you haven't mentioned so far, so I presume it's possibly sensitive.
