For a game with no multiplayer (just a server for claiming location names was all the impression I got a year ago), Canadian retailers seem to want to milk some money off of PS+ cards.

    Spoiler: show
    Fuck the Canadian dollar

My friend was just saying he was watching a twitch where the guy was trading stuff with other people so I'm still not sure about this no multiplayer thing.

"To be super clear - No Man's Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don't go in looking for that experience."

"The chances of two players ever crossing paths in a universe this large is pretty much zero."

Me: The chances of me buying this, now, is pretty much zero.

    Edit:

Also, two players did end up on the same planet, both streamed it, and they couldn't see each other:

I never put much stock into this Journey-esque "meeting" of strangers online with no multi-player systems to mess around with. I want to be Captain Kirk without all the convoluted space politics. Dassit.

If they add multiplayer factions and other stuff after a few months, I wouldn't be shocked. The devs are obviously people-pleasers and overachievers, which is also why folks are being harder on them than they are on most big money franchises.

The interviews for this game going back months and months said that it was going to be like Journey, where you can run into other players and maybe even interact with them a little, except among 18 quadrillion planets so the chance of actually meeting anyone is slim to none. This was repeatedly established a long, long time ago (in a galax- nope, not doing it).

Anyhow, there is no personal character customization and no real interactivity with other players, so running into friends isn't all that useful and I doubt you'd even be able to tell them apart - the entire game is 1st person, so players don't know what their own characters actually look like. You might be able to trade with other people you meet, I guess? "Multiplayer" was definitely never a selling point for the game.

It's supposed to be an exploration sim with elements of survivalism gameplay and I don't think they ever pretended it was anything but that. Don't run out of oxygen, don't get too cold or too hot, make sure you have enough fuel or tools or whatever to get off the planet. Don't get shot by the police drones, or the space pirates, or the hostile aliens. It's Space Skyrim, if you took out all the story quests but left some of the lore and added survival mods. Go ride a fuckin dinosaur or something.

It's really disheartening to me, seeing gamers get their hopes up so high over and over for games that aren't out yet, and start seeing things in the hype for these games that simply aren't there and never were going to be there, and then shit all over the product and the hard work of the devs when it finally comes out. Like, this is still an amazing looking game...for what it is and what it was promised to be, but of course it's not going to live up to whatever crazy dreams people had for it that had no basis in reality. I haven't bought it yet (lol broke) but I really want to, and the gameplay videos i've seen for it have been quite interesting. It's imagination and personal headcanon storybuilding that drives this type of exploration game and I know that isn't everyone's thing, but I can't figure out how it looked like anything but that from the interviews and previews we had before launch.

Honestly most of the heehaw and crying I see about NMS is people wanting it to be more like a mainstream title, more of the same. A template that keeps shoving mundane objectives at you that we've done countless times before, or something where you bullshit with your friends and build a giant dick out of rocks before moving on to the next flavor of the week. Makes me really sad, cause nearly from the beginning No Man's Sky was clearly labeled to be anything but "standard". It isn't made to be a blockbuster explosions and bullets huge setpiece defuse the nuke before it explodes New York game where you co op with your friends shooting space terrorists or whatever, and that's completely OK. Not every game needs to be built that way. It's just a chill space game that gives you the freedom to fly around discovering stuff while surviving against the unknown, and that's pretty cool. Might not be worth the full $60 to a lot of people, and to those I'd say just wait for the inevitable price drops and PSN/GoG/Steam sales.

I think the issue at hand is that the devs never felt the desire to clarify and curb expectations. People obviously got out of control with it, but Hello Games either egged it in with needlessly long non answers (see : multiplayer) or just not commenting at all. When a game comes out and the devs immediately have to begin damage control in regards to people's expectations, it shows a fundamental flaw in how they communicated their goals prior to release.

And I think with the game out now the review embargo and timing of the day one patch (remember, day one patches don't necessarily mean they're available the day of release, they're commonly out well before release for reviewers to get their hands on) is 100% intentional to prevent metacritic scores from affecting sales.

Anyway, in terms of what the game actually is and not what people's unrealistic expectations made it out to be, the game has some serious flaws. World generation is poor, there is a very small amount of different models for environments, animals, plants, and ships which leads to you running in to the same stuff by the 3rd or 4th planet. That was my biggest fear and it ended up being real. Alien NPCs are all the same and have extremely limited vocabulary. It could've been an extremely interesting thing to sit down and play for a few hours every once in a while, but it is marred by a lack of variety in terms of the things you can actually discover. That is the most disappointing part to me.

This is disappointing to hear. If you're gonna tout an endless universe you really need to have more than 3 or 4 base models of everything.

On the GB stream, they said that you need to find these items on various planets to unlock single word's in an aliens vocabulary. Big old scavenger hunt.

Have you traveled to different star systems?

I haven't gotten warp drive yet and the three planets have been similar but different in ways.

However, there's been a variety overall in some of the creatures and environments that I've noticed on Reddit. Not one persons journey but a collective of posts.

Maybe I'm reading what you're typing wrong, but he said over and over that it was possible, albeit unlikely, to meet other players. The players have now confirmed that is not possible, at all. As in: 0%.

Here he is stating it over and over: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE0nuW-mQ8A

To me, the point of the fun was being able to MAYBE encounter someone. If you can't AT ALL, don't lie about it. The more I type, the more I want to say fuck off to this group IRL.

I can't find the answer, what exactly does naming a planet before some one else do? Are there any other benefits to being first to land on a planet?

The game's missing a lot of quality-of-life features. Every item should stack. This is about as retarded as FFXI used to be when ores couldn't stack, but juices and other silly small materials could. Also, if you're not keeping track of your inventory when you buy things and, e.g., you buy 3 of an item that doesn't stack, but you only have 1 slot, you pay for all 3 but only get 1. Upgrades to your equipment such as your jetpack, life support, and suit—even the weapons on your ship—these things should have their own set amount of upgrade slots; they shouldn't take up inventory space. It seems really stupid the way they have it right now. At the moment, when looking at the galactic map, they don't have a way to show you all the star systems/planets you've discovered. If you get too far away from a planet you liked, it's nearly impossible to get back to it. I figured it would've been obvious to add a way to make a star system/planets placed in a favorites list or something. I've gotten so far from my starting planet which I really want to go back and explore, but I don't know where it is anymore. This really upsets me. I like how they have multiple languages for all the races, but I personally would've preferred you unlocked letters (like in FFX) instead of individual words. I don't know if it's just me, but my character is really short and it's irritating being so close to the ground. It's not the game-of-the-decade like people made it out to be; it's just an average game.

Edit: wanted to add, graphics aren't everything but they do take/add to the experience. Textures are not well made and I agree with everything in the Reddit post Prothecar posted. The only thing unique about the animals is they all look like toddler drawings brought to life. I think investing on solid models and making parameters for which kind of planets they could exist on would have been better. No multiplayer shouldn't be a deal breaker but some sort of social features would have been great. Maybe sub space transmissions where you can send pictures, materials, or just a message from a trade outpost would be great or something like wind walker had had where you can put pictures in a bottle, they could let us send out pods with pictures/materials or messages for fellow explorers. I think they believe multiplayer can only be shooting each other or teaming up to shoot people but it isn't.

I see, I was thinking you were expecting more multiplayer than there was advertised to be. If the chance is currently completely zero, then yes it's not working as advertised. I imagine this will be patched now that so much attention is being brought to it, however... I wonder if it's something they just overlooked (because it's not an important feature really) or if they were actually lying about it... I'd bank more on the former than the latter, but anything's possible I guess.

After following the development news for this game and the flurry of setbacks and issues before and during launch, their main problem the way I see it is that they're perfectionists and wanted to have everything done and perfect right away. It seems to me that they tried to cram too much into too little a development timeframe and now it's backfiring on them. With the advent of patching, no game is perfect at launch anymore. This is to be 100% expected at this point. Gamers pitch a crazy fit when a game's release is delayed even a few months. People even sent this poor guy death threats for delaying the game a few weeks. If NMS needed more development time for everything they wanted to put into it, they weren't going to get it, because gamers don't want to wait anymore (but if it comes out broken or lackluster and needs to be patched several times before it's good, well, you know what they say about first impressions...)

I remember, back before patching, when games would be delayed a year or more because the dev team didn't feel their game was living up to what they wanted it to be. The patching system we have now puts so much pressure on game companies to push out their product asap even if it's broken, and then to push out fixes so fast for games that shouldn't have been released so soon in the first place. I sincerely hope they put the patching system to good use because they clearly have an interesting base product, it sounds like it just needs more...stuff.

According to Reddit it's currently 0.

Two players "found" each other, aka they went to the same location and couldn't see one another.
