    Star Fox Zero

Time leaked this about three hours early

    http://i.minus.com/ibvImLQaGIPlkj.jpg

In his new version of Star Fox — still fundamentally a spaceship-based shooter — players now use the GamePad’s motion controls to aim and fire the Arwing’s weapons, simultaneously controlling the nimble craft itself by thumbing the joysticks to accelerate or turn and pull off signature moves like barrel rolls, loops and the tactically essential Immelman turn. And you can still morph your Arwing into a land tank, rocketing down to the surface of a planet, then rattling around the battlefield and laying waste to the landscape.

But Miyamoto and his team have added a new vehicle mode, one that’s designed to exemplify the new motion control scheme: It lets up to two players pilot a helicopter-like craft, one player controlling the helicopter itself, the other controlling a tiny robot you can drop from a tether to roll around a limited area, either snatching up booty or blasting enemies. Leave the robot hanging as you fly around the battlefield and it becomes a kind of dangling, swingable cannon.

I have high hopes for this as long as they also let you control it without using the wii u gamepad. Star fox 64 still goes down as one of my favorite games ever and is long as it's closer to that and not the new ones (which it seems to be!) I'll be happy.

The Gamepad won't be optional from the tone of the article.

With the helicopter, we’ve been thinking of the two-screen gameplay, and so that was one of the early ideas. One of the things we’re considering at this point is making the helicopter so you could have two pilots, two people playing together, and what that’ll allow is you could have one player piloting the helicopter, and another player who’s using another controller to control the robot.
In the case of the Arwing spaceship, if you have two pilots, they’re most likely going to be sitting front-to-back, and you’ll have one piloting, the other able to look around. When you have someone piloting but someone else who can look around, what’s most beneficial to the person who’s looking around is the ability to look down below. In designing the Arwing we couldn’t quite think of a good way to have to redesign it so you’d have one player who could look down below. Thus we decided to create the helicopter.
Also, it's being speculated since the first two titles are smaller games, then either this version of StarFox is another small title, or possibly just a remake. We'll know for sure in an hour.

Time took down the article, they don't know the difference between Eastern and Pacific time. Someone on GAF mirrored it on Google Docs.

Yah, I agree with this. I hope they allow for a basic controller mode. Personally the gimmick is nice and all but when you're at home, the flailing your upper torso left to right to fly gets old real damn fast and none to good for your arms.

    Edit:

Would make it really annoying then if true. Its not even like the gamepad adds some sort of realism to it lol. Last i checked pilots don't need to flail their upper bodies to turn the plane.

If Miyamoto has been working on Star Fox, that means Retro has been working on something else.

    Hmm...

Almost makes me want to waste money on a Wii U.

    Nah, though.

I'm going to have the same problems with this as I did with Starfox 3DS: When the controller you're holding is also the screen is also motion controlled, rapid fire button pressing it going to fuck your accuracy right in its asshole.

I'll give it to nintendo. They're more often then not willing to just let it out and paraphrase "Yeah, of course we're working on it guys! But it's nowhere near ready so just chill alright?"

Not really, Nintendo played their cards incredibly close to their chest until the Wii U tripped out of the gates. They were frequent targets of criticism because they wouldn't be open about in-development games as a way to build interest in their hardware. The world just had to assume that sooner or later their ip stables would end up on their hardware.

Japan learns only when forced to learn when it comes to thinks like openness and exclusivity. Then again, most businesses run by old men are the same. The companies we hear about nowadays being open and upfront are typically either run by or founded by younger generations.

I'm extremely happy for Nintendo's horrible showing with the WiiU. It forced them, and continues to force them to either adapt and modernize on many of their approaches, or wither away and fall off the vine. This openness we're seeing from them is nothing short of desperation, and its the best kind of desperation if you're a consumer who has wanted this for over a decade like I have.
