The game is really growing on me. I wasted some CP before I understood how mutations worked, but now I've got the hang of it.

Does this game have a demo? I dislike Monster Hunter so I'd like to try it before I make a purchase

Figured I'd note a few things that tripped me up to start that might help others. I'm not sure the tutorials were clear about how some mechanics work.

    • It costs gil to accept quests, and more importantly subquests. It's not a major concern but if you don't realize what's happening you can accept too many and drain your wallet if you needed it for something else.
    • When you use a Crystal Surge in the field, some of your abilities have a chance at undergoing a mutation that can then be permanently learned back in town for a cost. That part isn't hard. But what the game isn't clear on is that creates a new ability (i.e. Provoke1 instead of Provoke) which then must be manually equipped. Then with Provoke1 out in the field, it can learn mutations that will become a Provoke2. It's a rather clunky way to handle upgrades, and it's easy to assume that learning the mutation automatically applies it to the original ability which it does not.

The interface is a little frustrating at times, but I gotta say I'm really digging the music.

is this fun if you have friends? I tried getting monster hunter 3 ultimate for the wii u and it was nothing like I thought it was. The only time we could co op was through instances to just fight bosses in the arena had to play solo to unlock more to fight any of the decent things which felt boring to me.

I was hoping that this would be a game where multiplayer would be fun where that lacked ._.

Although I did hear the monster hunter 4 is better in that regard? It actually has open world co op or something rather than just through accepting ridiculous gathering quests and whatnot

Is game better multi then solo? Yes

But it's the same missions, you don't have special online missions (at least not where I am) So you just gather in a room then take missions that you could do solo and do them with people

Based on impressions of the game you should be lucky because now you can cancel it lol. Its basically really fun for the first few hours then seeps really fast into super repetition and boredom. At least from the general consensus (more than just from thee who shall not be named)

I cancelled mine as well because of Amazon. I'll try to pick it up in store in the next couple of days for the road trip i'm taking to PAX this weekend.

Got the same thing this morning. Apparently amazon fucked up the pre-orders for this but I'm in no real hurry to play this though, I'll wait it out.

Yeah they over preordered or something. FF14 friends got same email.

I got what I expected with the game. Definitely a simplistic monster hunter esque title, but without the combat system. I wasn't expecting it to be huge in the way of depth. It is fun for a while tho. I haven't played online yet with friends.

Played about 4 hours yesterday, and it's just not doing it for me. I would have preferred there to be some point in playing different jobs, but they don't level up or anything, you just make better gear for that job. Mobs are dead easy to kill, and the zones are tiny and simple. The camera is a pita as well to use while running, even with a N3DS.

I've just killed ifrit. Does it get anymore interesting later on, I keep hoping I'm missing something? Fantasy life had a much more interesting job system than this seems to.

I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. It's not the deepest combat, but I think it's fun. I'm on 6* quests now, and I know that people complain about lack of variety. If you're bored early on, later in the game probably won't do much for you (but that may change later in the game than I am).

To me, it feels about on the same level as Fantasy Life. It's not overly challenging (there was one fight I somewhat struggled with and one mission that I absolutely get destroyed in), but for me the fun comes in playing the different classes and working on building different skill mutations. It has that "random effect" quality that I enjoy in games like this.

I've played whm almost the entire time and have been able to solo things fairly easily without using any items. If you add in the difficulty options in quests, it just makes the quest a little more hectic.

Overall, I like it, but I can understand people not enjoying it. I think a lot of people thought this was going to be MH X FF, and it's nowhere near that. Classes feel like slight variations, though again I haven't played other classes much, so I could be wrong on this.

I think what I don't like about it is there is no point in playing any of the classes. I like to grind and level shit up (I'd still be killing crabs for hours in xi if that was still a thing). But they don't gain levels or really do anything unique. I guess I was hoping for more of a mmo-light feel. with special mobs and drops and stuff. and leveling up different jobs. and for a game with explorers in the title, there isn't anything to explore. The zones are tiny. crazy tiny and are mapped out the second you enter them anyway.

Honestly I'm not sure what I was expecting, but something more than this. (I haven't played monster hunter)

I totally agree with you on the job issue. I wish there was more of a differentiation between the various jobs. In all honesty, it boils down to what weapons can be used, a passive ability, and then an active ability. I would have liked to have seen more job-specific abilities, both passive and active, so that playing a whm didn't feel so much like playing a blm or a sage or whatever. I'm sure there are effects from the different stat distributions, but I honestly haven't paid too much attention to it.

I will say that there are special drops and mobs. There are the eidolons, which have their own battlefields, but there are "stronger" mobs throughout, like certain dragons, Behemoth kings, etc. that do have rare drops to make certain weapons and armor. I had to grind on bahamut several times to get some items to make a better staff.

The exploration aspect gets me too. I think I've unlocked all areas in the game after playing less than a week, so that's a little disappointing. The areas feel very static to me, with the exception of a stronger monster appearing every now and then.

The monster companion system doesn't feel that deep to me yet, but I've just been bringing 3 along with me the whole time. I haven't looked into the fusing aspect much.

The lack of a level system (except for the explorer level, which I'm not sure how that affects things) doesn't bother me too much. Maybe because I play a lot of MH and there isn't really a character level system in that, so I just didn't think about it much. I do think there was a real opportunity here to have the mmo-lite genre expanded from Fantasy Life. I wish it would have just been an improvement on that in a lot of ways.
