It definitely takes less creative muscle to repeat every single step of these routines, you gotta remember, those animators were under the whip.

I think it was more getting the timing right, plus the hand-drawn frames problem. Once you figure out how many frames it takes to make a dance/move/whatever look somewhat natural once, why not use it again?

I thought they did the animation with model sketches/wireframes etc and then filled them out. In which case, those animations are indeed assets that they could re-use later.

Pretty sure it was drawn in full from the start. I remember seeing videos on it as a kid.

Something I always wondered, which the above gif kinda explains.

Do animators for all drawn content have to draw every single frame?

    That must suck ass.

No matter how they did it, it was incredible. Huge props to those animators. I know they worked like dogs.

Yes and no, traditional western 2D feature film animation (i.e. Disney, Warner Bros., Bluth etc.) was filmed at 24fps. Lot of the time animators would get away with animating on "twos" which meant that every frame was shot twice so they were effectively doing 12 drawings for every second of film with a moving character. For background characters this could be even less and of course there are points where the character moves very little so entire films aren't done at 24 drawings per second. But yes, for main character on a close-up or as lone focus of view on screen they would have to go with "ones" which would mean 24 drawings per every second. The clean-up artist skill at that point is incredible as the difference between each frame is minuscule (see under spoiler, click for bigger, images from Richard Williams' book Animators Survival Kit).

In the ye olde days of Disney pre-Xerox (Sleeping Beauty and everything before it) every frame was first sketched and drawn by animator, then cleaned up by clean-up department and then traced and painted on transparent cel by ink and paint crew. Every single one was hand-painted, Snow White had real rouge dabbed onto her cheeks, the work and attention to detail was immense. Then came the Xerox years (101 Dalmatians onward) where techonology existed to just photocopy the animators' rough drawings directly to cel and then they were painted by hand which sped up the process a bit. The films from the early days of this have that very distinctive sketchy feel to them. By Fox and the Hound in the 1980s the techonology had evolved to allow to scan in the pencil drawings and then colour them digitally which saved a ton of time and then Great Mouse Detective onwards came the slow, gradual rise of completely CG feature films. I'm using Disney as an example to establish the timeline but all the while other studios would had used the same technologies. But yes, even with digital colours every single (or every other at least) frame is hand-animated and cleaned up by hand. And then on top of that there'd be separate background painters onto whose work the animation cels would be placed and later digitally composited for filming.

    Spoiler: show

There's a lot of video clips and drawings being posted online at the moment by ex-Disney animators who now have time on their hands if anyone else is interested in this old stuff before I bore you all to death.

Here, we do not animate everything. If it doesn't move just leave it. In 2D animation there were the actual animators, the inbetweeners, and the clean up artists. Animators would do your main key poses and make it move The inbetweener would do every other one of those drawings. Disney (feature length) was done on 24 fps or on ones. Looney Tunes and most TV animation was done at 12fps, and most low budget animation including most anime has been done at 6fps. Which is why anime looks as limited as it is and is more focused on story, but the larger the budget the better frame rate.

Glen Keane's animation of Duet done at 60fps:
