At the same time, though, I wouldn't recommend anyone ignore the advice of medical professionals and self diagnose. As many stories as there are of retarded shit doctors do, they have hundreds more stories of people they've seen that felt too comfortable taking control of their own treatment. Noncompliance is a huge issue and causes way more problems than unnecessary back surgery.

And I agree with noncompliance, it's the biggest pain in the ass right behind insurance. The worst is the diabetics who don't take their medication and roll into the ED with with a blood glucose level in the 500's, because they think it's fine to eat a box of donuts after dinner and you can forget about asking them the last time they took their diabetic medication because they don't fucking remember. But, this is the struggle you're going to encounter in every level of healthcare, whether it's the guy who doesn't properly care for their post surgical wounds or people non compliant with their med list.

If all articles were equal, this would be true. However, I cited a Lancet Neurology (IF=21.823) metaanalysis from February of 2015 authored by leaders in the field and you cited a Pallative Care (IF=2.845) article by two people I don't recognize from 2004. Impact factor isn't like golf, you're aiming for a high score, and new evidence continues to come out all the time. You should always be aiming for the most recent resource you can find.
