this thing was great for road trips. It made playing easier but you did go through batteries more.

I had this because I was poor
I had the original Gameboy and all they had at the time was this baby:

i had both of these and honestly the little spiraly thing was better. you had to hold the magnifier just right to get it to work properly, and it was a really awkward angle. the light was just a light... and it lasted fucking forever. pretty sure if i go dig it out it'll still work.
I had this beast for mine.
Speakers were the gray nubs while the light was powered with another set of batteries. Case also carried like 8-10 games.
The original gameboy was pretty big already. That thing makes me think it was pretty massive lol
I'd say it roughly doubled the width and tripled the thickness. The light/glass folded backed and I'd nicknamed mine the "Gamebaby" since it kinda looked a swaddled baby if you didn't fold the lens back completely. Either way, while GBs were durable things, this just added an extra layer. Was also really hard to lose because it was large. Got me through a number of road trips, however.
Thing I remember most about the first Gameboy was the first time I ever told a girl I liked her and she turned me down on the playground, I took off to a shaded part and played a Sylvester and Tweety game till Recess was over and acted like nothing happened after that.
My grey-box gameboy was a brick, but worked great. Hundreds if not thousands of hours on the thing and it still worked fine. The only thing that went wrong with it was the screen cover. Its glue dried out and it fell off.
LOL I had this! My OG Gameboy died for no reason, so I got a green one when they released the colored versions. That was the last Gameboy I ever got, too.
Edit: Also remember getting this from my Uncle. OG Gameboy ate batteries up....

Which is why you needed one of these fuckers clipped to your belt.

OG Gameboy had nothing on the game gear for battery cannibalism.

I remember that magnifier for the Gameboy Color. It was complete shit IMO.
The light was amazing though.
Gamegear ATE battery's alive... You might have got 2 hours out of 6AA...
Man, yah had all those gadgets and addons. That's not a struggle.
Struggle was with the original and they didn't have such trinkets. Real OG. Saving allowance for batteries and NoworLaters.
My life was complete when I got this guy for Christmas one year. Then all hopes were shattered when the batteries only lasted an hour.

I was about to ask was there ever a point that the low battery light wasn't on, on that thing?
