hell if i know, that shit aint teaching multiplication anyway. its teaching counting. what happens when that kid has to work with numbers too large to draw is going to be a travesty

The diagrams are probably there for the visual learners and eventually obviously they won't need them anymore, at least that's the hope.

The entire notion that the order matters when it comes to multiplication though ... sigh. As a future educator it really bothers me that some teachers believe in teaching conformity and building robots who will do as they say and not think about it. To hell with that, I want to teach people to be thinkers with the capability to think for themselves. Sigh.

I'm guessing that it's showing that the teacher was grading from a key rather than reading the actual problem, and so marked them wrong. Possibly propaganda against standardized education system, or maybe just a joke, or maybe just a really bad teacher.

When I was in college getting my teaching endorsement, my "Teaching Math" series was 100% group-graded. I had people who got As, because they were in my group, who literally did not know how to do two-digit or three-plus-addend addition, let alone multiplication, division, or fractions. It would not surprise me at all to see teachers like that in lower-grade math who "Really love kids!" and so slip by some state's loose-standards (in this case, Oregon), and teach 100% from a book, and don't understand that 3x2 = 2x3.

Edit: Oh, and Bane, that visual is TOTALLY fine, especially for A) showing that 2x3 = 3x2 for visual learners, like Aksannyi said. You introduce the idea, show them, mix it up with manipulatives as well, and through repetition, you get to the point they can get the abstract. Of course, that stuff is hell for kids who DO get the abstract right away. But forget learning individual kids learning styles and grouping them that way. We have to glomp everyone together and teach everything four times.

I'm a currently employed teacher of 7th grade science. Prepare to have all of your ideologies, hopes, dreams and over-all general inspirations on why you became a teacher and what it is you want to do while teaching, smashed into oblivion by district policies, mandates, meetings, trainings, conferences, parents, curriculum maps, evaluation systems, evaluated pay, standardized testing, teaching for the test and state standards adapted to common core.
