My neighbor across the street, their daughter is in grad school at Columbia, and she got arrested in the very first wave of these protests kicking off

Do the protestors have demands of some kind?

Protesting at a college to put pressure on ??? because something is happening between two other countries seems like a bit of a bankshot at best.

They made the news and made the somewhat trivial/obvious point that not all Americans support the war when the Columbia students were arrested. What message are they trying to send since then?

Am I just old? What is the point here?

Doubt they thought that far ahead.

Every couple weeks it seems like in the Bay area protestors block off the bridges demanding a cease-fire, because preventing everyday Joe's from making it to their jobs in the morning will surely pressure Gavin Newsom to get right on that.

At least protesting by blocking roads actually puts pressure on the mayor/governor and could be a sensible way to push for local political change. Sleeping outside at college to put pressure on Bibi? Bibi via Biden? Bibi via Biden via Kamala? to stop the war in Gaza is just twenty degrees too far removed for me to even see how it works in theory.

I'm in Austin and have been following the UT protests and it's a mess honestly. There's a ton of protesters that want UT to divest from any sort of funds that are pro-war, but there's also a ton of people shouting things with good intentions but not enough knowledge to really understand what their shouting means. I've seen people define "From the rivers to the sea" to mean something that is basically pro killing Israel people and also heard it defined as something far more peaceful that basically just means let the Palestinians live their lives. I'm going to wager if the phrase can have such vast differences in what it means depending on who hears it that maybe just maybe you should not use that during a protest since it'll just cause confusion.

Basically, at least at UT, it seems like there's I dunno 10 groups of slightly differing ideologies some of which are a pretty standard protest to raise awareness and some are far more extreme and the mixture of all these groups is causing chaos. You wanna protest on something I do not at all agree with on a college campus? Freaking go for it. I encourage it and commend it. A lot of the kids are doing just that, but there's others that are setting up camps for some reason and ones in Columbia occupying actual buildings, so everyone is getting lumped into the same group which leads to the left cherry picking the peaceful ones and the right cherry picking the people occupying buildings.

Come this with UTs very very pro free speech stance until last week and you get this shitshow.

Note: When I said "protest something I don't agree with" I mean that as in, there are so many different groups protesting that no one is going to agree with all of them, but if you're just shouting and waving signs then freaking go for it.

These mysteries are a google away

    https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/27/busin...sts/index.html

    New York CNN  —

One of the core demands over the past week by the pro-Palestinian student groups at Columbia University has been for the school to withdraw investment funds from what they describe as companies profiting from Israel’s military action in Gaza.

Columbia’s endowment is worth $13.6 billion and is managed by a university-owned investment firm.

The request from Columbia University Apartheid Divest — a coalition of student groups behind the movement — includes, among other steps, divesting endowment funds from several weapons manufacturers and tech companies that do business with Israel’s government. The group has described those companies as profiting “from Israeli apartheid, genocide, and military occupation of Palestine.” Israel denies accusations of genocide.

As someone who grew up in an overwhelmingly Jewish community with overwhelmingly somewhat liberal Jewish people and basically existed as somewhat culturally Jewish for 80% of my life. I have some insight.

This problem doesn't end until all of one side is dead. Even then, probably not gonna actually stop unless it's the Israelis that are cleansed with God's fire.

There is no solution here. Protests, divestment demands, UN pressure. None of that will work.

Get rid of Bibi, won't work. Get rid of Hamas, won't work.

These peoples are diametrically opposed and without "both sides"ing too hard they can't survive without each other. My somewhat to very liberal Jewish friends mostly turn into warhawk jingoists when you bring up the possibility of Israel conceding anything. Think of it like asking an American to just "leave al Qaeda alone" right after 9/11. It's unthinkable.

Also, there's so much bad/worse/ongoing shit even in that region and surrounding areas that no one gives a flying shit about because it doesn't involve Jews.

There won't be any pivot from the US on this because we benefit too much from Israel's tech sector and their ability to keep the region surveilled for us.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

France and England went to war for 114 consecutive years and today yell at each other over soccer, peace will come, it always does. neither side is eradicating the other and they will learn to live together some day. real question is whether it takes 10 more years or 50.

9/11 was barely 20 years ago and most Americas today barely spare al Qaeda a thought.

Surely twenty five hundred years is enough time to move on from the first temple.

If Israel hadn't seized Gaza and the West Bank in '67 we'd ~already be there. Those areas are just a gaping wound that keeps the rest of the "river to the sea" fanaticism alive.

And with ~0 desire to return Gaza to Palestinian control and ~0 desire to remove settlements from the West Bank its going to continue to, uh, gape into the indefinite future.

Didn't they recently just uncover mass graves of execution victims? Doesn't bode well for everyone sitting down for a soccer game anytime soon.

Getting colleges to divest from companies making bank with arms deals to Israel

Peace would come from Palestinians accepting Israeli dominion. Zet is correct that Israel will not compromise. Israel is the more powerful lobby because they are more valuable as an ally, so there will be no external geopolitical pressure for anything extreme. So the Palestinians simply have to accept the reality of Israeli authority which includes Gaza and the West Bank.

It's not dissimilar to the situation of the indigenous tribes of the U.S. It may be unjust, there is no reversing settler colonialism. Progress comes from settler concessions by working through the state.

what's a word for near-eradication then? one team is on life support here meng

did we throughout the Americas 'learn to live together' with our land's indigenous people or did we just win and rapebreed new ethnicities? i suppose we let em have a few reservations here in the US

I mean the current goings on have more to do with Israel running an apartheid regime and a giant open air prison.

So the Palestinians simply have to accept the reality of Israeli authori
That may be the logical outlook but that's never going to happen long term. Israel will abuse it's power again, Hamas will retaliate again, Israel will start murdering random Palestinian citizens in retaliation and bomb a few schools and hospitals.

They got better weapons and more power so you just gotta roll over and accept them rationing calories to you, stealing your land and shooting your people in the knees for fun. Sorry but shouldn't have rolled Gaza as starting area if you didn't want hard mode gameplay.

The problem is, it wasn't anathema to the concept of America to give Native Americans citizenship and voting rights.

Israel is an explicit ethnostate, there is no "bringing Palestinians into the fold" on the table.
