I had a ton of health issues when I was playing so I wouldn't have been doing a whole lot otherwise. Didn't have very many friends either.

I've met 4 people I played with and Tyrath has been literally one of my best friends for decades. I played way too much for sure but the game wasn't a black hole that ruined my life or anything even close to it.

My life would be so massively different without it that it's impossible to quantify if it would even be good or bad. I can't even imagine it. It influenced way too much.

I'm never going to complain about my time playing FFXI. That small monthly subscription kept me from spending all my money on other entertainment and let me save up for my house's down-payment in '09. Along with the first-time homebuyer tax credit to purchase furniture and appliances.

I mean, I had my fun with XI in it's day but I'm not really nostalgic for it - it was and still is an Everquest style time waster. Not that I would have spent the time writing a book or learning another language or something but at least I wouldn't own 500 other games I never played.

Mostly I find the idea of going back these days just baffling, I mean sure we're all mostly closer to our graves then our births and I could understand wanting to try and reclaim some seemingly brighter time from the past even as the time you have left slips inexorable through your fingers and how regardless of your personal circumstances, everything seems to be moving the the wrong direction, that times before seemed better in ways that can't solely be chalked up to one's own youth and the future seems to be slipping into chaos in ways you're powerless to slow and wonder how much is the fault of the older generation still clinging to the levers of power in a way no other generation before ever has and how much is to be blamed on your own complacency but why would you want to spend your time playing an old MMO?

Nostalgic yes, but then I see how much I can do otherwise and I realize the opportunity gain ain't worth it. The game is just too much for this lifestyle lol
