In all, six of my relatives, three close friends and several colleagues have died in the three bloody wars and countless battles between Israel and Hamas. Each time the violence erupts and I report as a journalist on the people who lost their homes, their children or their lives, the memories creep back. I always think, “That could be me.” When the thundering bombs, buzzing drones and pounding artillery refresh the pain and trigger the old fear, I seek refuge in work.

The Associated Press office is the only place in Gaza City I feel somewhat safe. The Israeli military has the coordinates of the high-rise, so it’s less likely a bomb will bring it crashing down. But on a deeper level, it’s speaking to people in Gaza, working to get their voices out of a territory they themselves cannot leave, that keeps me sane. When I tell the world what’s happening here, I find some small solace.

I honestly don’t know a lot about Israel and what’s going on but it kinda seems like there’s a few baddies and Israel's response is “a few bad apples spoil the bunch so fuck literally all of you.”

Going to go ahead and toss this edit in before I get a reply - I literally know nothing about the situation. I’m probably way off base but given how long everything is going on it’s hard to look into why. Anyone got a tldr?

Add in lynching non-Jewish Israelis and you pretty much have it, I think.

The longer story is that nonviolent Palestinian groups were going to try to march through some gate that they aren't allowed to march through. Israel responded with incredible force. Hamas was like "nn-notice me Israel-sempai" and launched largely ineffective rockets. Then Israel bombed the fuck out of Palestine and also lynch mobs roamed Israeli cities beating up non-Jewish citizens.

A conflict that basically would have been a one-sided story of disproportionate Israeli violence and human rights abuses / anarchy became slightly nuanced because Hamas is a bag of dicks with strong political incentives to remain the face of the Palestinian opposition. They interjected into a conflict between Israel and unrelated Palestinian groups, probably allegedly due to the human rights abuses the peaceful protestors were suffering, but probably actually because the rise of alternative groups threatens their legitimacy.

Israel's response (particularly considering how ineffective the missiles were due to the Iron Dome system that Obama hooked them up with) is still disgusting, but it isn't 100% unprovoked.

since that war the Israelis have ruled over several million Palestinians in disputed territory, and about five million more live in the loosely organized Palestinian territories that they Israelis regularly occupy/go to war with (which is what is happening now). the sides have never been able to agree to a distribution of the land, and Israel uses its superior power to brutalize and impoverish the Palestinian territories which engage in endemic terrorism against Israel.

the present squabbling is as Byrthnoth describes, one of dozens of incidents of it in the decades since the status quo was established in 1948. Israel does what it wants and the Palestinians suffer what they must.

Very good synopsis - only tweak I would make is to specifically note the "Nakba" - where ~half the Palestinians existing on the land dubbed Israel fled or were forced out as the Jews made Israel an entity. Whether those people (or, at this point, their children/grandchildren) should be allowed to return to the land they were forced out of is a major point of contention.

But since allowing "right of return" would make Israel proper precariously close to a not Jewish-majority country it's considered an absolute non-solution.
