I feel bad on one hand, because of course I do: innocent people are dying. On the other hand, however, this shit has existed for over a millennia, and should be expected both by people outside of the culture, but especially within it. Every 10 years brown folks in the area try to kill other brown folks with slightly less melanin and justify it from anything as a holy war to petty revenge for the past. The cycle never ends. Aside from the loss of life as a general concept, its hard to drum up anything more than a cold, indifferent apathy for seeing the same thing again and again.

See, when Europeans did this, it led to WW1 and WW2, which nearly blew the planet up. Thank God the same can't be said (for now) about this shit.

I think a question to ask is who funds Hamas and why are they acting now? Clearly it is Iran who funds Hamas and influences their actions. The current peace talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia are probably giving Tehran the shakes. Tehran has just spent over a year stamping out political opponents in Iran. Their grasp on power is on the ebb. As a weapons supplier to Russia they probably realize that Israel and Saudi Arabia might hit them hard. Their options to prevent this are limited. Utilizing Hamas and the Palestinians has always been a convenient option.

Israel has formally declared war, US intelligence expects a major offensive into Gaza within 24-48 hours.

Sorry everyone, Babylon won a war 2500 years ago, so you all have to suffer today.

This is going to be a slaughter and will recalcify tensions between the rest of the middle east and Israel that had been slowly thawing due to obvious economic self-interest.

I think the story of Iran using Hamas to antagonize Israel to prevent a more meaningful alliance with Saudi Arabia sounds plausible.

Either way, odds are that Israel is about to make themselves the bad guy again. 700 Israeli civilians dying is bad, but they are already at 400 Palestinians and it wouldn't be hard to imagine tens of thousands of Palestinians dying here (plus the dehumanizing rhetoric). End of the month, it is going to look like Israel was the victim of a terrorist attack caused by resentment that they have cultivated for generations of Palestinians and then they overreacted and used their military to slaughter "savage" civilians.

Vibes indicate that the grass is going to get cut real short this time.

    Wonder what Egypt will do...

To be fair, what would the best course of action be? They're essentially doing what the US did after 9/11. There were around 3000 US deaths from 9/11, and roughly 46000 Afghan civilian deaths.

I'm not saying it's a good (or bad) thing, but they obviously can't do nothing in response to it. And it's not like they can hold a civil discourse with Hamas to get them to stop the attacks, politics won't solve the issue any time soon.

Yes, Israel has treated the Palestinians horrible for a long time, but that doesn't justify the attack.

I kind of felt the same way that it is expected to happen and there will be a loss of life, but after finding out late last night that a friend of the family lost two of their daughters who were at the festival, all I feel is sadness for all of the innocent people involved..

It's actually equivalent as far as death tolls are concerned to 30k people dying on 9/11, which is 10x more than the real total.

I actually wonder, if Israel completely threw in the towel, gave them the entire country and migrated every single Israeli out of the region entirely, would they hunt them down in another hypothetical region?

The actual stated goal of Hamas and quite a few other of these groups isn't just retaking Israel, it's the wholesale extermination of all Jews. It's never going to happen, but the hypothetical scenario does make me wonder.

worked out super well for everyone

and to be really fair it is nothing like what the US ended up doing in Afghanistan. you can argue the merits of the invasion, how it was an overreaction or incompetently performed, but after the overthrow of the Taliban the NATO occupying force switched almost immediately to nation building (which failed obv). the day the Israelis start building schools and wells and flooding money into Gaza will be quite a day.

it's a meaningless query but Hamas derives near the entirety of its appeal from the oppression of the Palestinians and the excesses of the Israelis. they would likely exist in one form or another for some time but popular support for them would collapse in the absence of such. one of the benefits of making a people responsible for their own governance is their leaders become responsible for good governance. they either serve the people, jobs and food, or get yeeted out (eventually).

but also there would likely be a Palestinian Civil War between them and Fatah. easily and often forgotten but the majority of Palestinians do not live in Gaza under Hamas rule, but rather Fatah in the West Bank.
