I've been watching Al Jazeera, as they've been reporting what's going on in the region better than any other sources, and they said only 5 commanders knew of the operation and were expecting a bigger resistance. The plan was to capture some hostages to negotiate a temporary peace deal, but were surprised by the lack of resistance and just went full steam ahead.
Israel is claiming to have the bodies of 1500 insurgents who had crossed over before the borders were re-securced.
