Israel is exercising violence in excess of what it needs to and in doing so is acting counterproductively to their goal.

But if Israel were necessary for the liberal international order (it's not), then yes it would be an acceptable cost.

Just like how we deal with Saudi Arabia despite their fueling the civil war in Yemen which is way worse and has killed far more Arabs than this conflict.

I would argue their goal is to claim all of occupied Palestine. So their violence is not nearly approaching the excess they desire. As far as being necessary. Where do you define that? As they sure are necessary for imperial interests in the region. Any interest solid enough to merit supporting such a regime sounds like it is of value to maintaining your precious order.

I've also complained about Yemen before, in the Ukraine thread. It's not like one killing more than the other is of relevance though. I will stop there rather than go down that road.

I would argue their goal is to claim all of occupied Palestine. So their violence is not nearly approaching the excess they desire. As far as being necessary. Where do you define that? As they sure are necessary for imperial interests in the region. Any interest solid enough to merit supporting such a regime sounds like it is of value to maintaining your precious order.

Their goal is their own security. But as AG has pointed out already, at this point they would be better off completely destroying Palestine than the half measures they are doing. Right now what they are doing just breeds more radical resistance through the anger and resentment they leave in their wake. I've suggested that just fully occupy the territory and colonize it outright because direct humane colonization would be preferable to the limited sovereignty they currently extend that only functions to enable Hamas' continued existence, and the inevitable cycle of violence that follows.

Israel is useful for our interests in the region, but necessary? No. We have other allies in the region that help us counter balance Iran and Russia (see Saudi Arabia).

Honestly even though Israel didn't quite get in under the buzzer with their "oh we can just take land and push out most of the natives and that's cool?" pre-war status quo, I still think things would be WAY more chill if they hadn't captured Gaza and the West Bank 45 years ago. That continuing injustice with no end in sight makes things simply impossible, and the continued settlement of the West Bank demonstrates that Israel has no interest in righting that wrong. Generations age out of continuing to retaliate for 75 year old atrocities, but when that shit is every day currently there's just no path forward.

also anecdotally, as most of u know i'm a grad student in the ol liberal af UC system and campus has been gettin WILD. posters for both sides going up and getting torn down, shouting matches on campus, reports of sustained harassment for those too outspoken on both sides. talked about with heat in every class. haven't seen a campus this divided since the height of Iraq. ugly atmosphere.

When you colonize an area, make laws that blatantly discriminate against other ethnicities, violently force people out of their homes, and murder and oppress specific people. Then yeah, I would imagine worrying about your "security" after that is a top concern. Because terrorism is a symptom of oppression and when you run a modern day ghetto or simply put, the world's largest open air prison. Then yeah, people obviously would rather fight and die than accept such horseshit.

Yet here people sit arguing that Palestinians living in occupied Palestine are better off being subjugated and suppressed than have "limited sovereignty." Fucked up.

Israel should be thrown into the dust bin of history with the likes of Rhodesia and other inhumane ethnostates.
