The "evidence" that mass rapes occurred was based on this woman and her nephew's reporting, not anything physical or victim testimony. The headline "rape victim" in the NYT article has multiple members of her family vehemently denying that any such rape occurred - saying "The media invented it". - and this was prior to the revelations about the Israeli stringer's bloodthirsty Zionism.

There's always been significant questions about the story - now we just better understand the motivation for the fabrications.

note that i'm not saying that it's clear that there were zero rapes occurred, but the evidence that this was widespread or a tactic is very thin - which makes sense, these Hamas fighters thought this was going to be a quick cross-border raid until they encountered far less resistance than they were expecting
