I mean, people have been calling for him to basically come down hard on Bibi for months. The argument has been that he would be better able to extract more concessions from him through a Hug Bibi strategy than by just threatening to withdraw support, which supporters of the Hug Bibi strategy necessarily asserted would have zero effect because the Hug Bibi strategy was also having ~zero effect.

Well, now we see that coming down hard on Bibi works. Biden should fucking crush him like a ton of bricks.

Bibi had Biden in a corner because Israel did legitimately suffer a horrifying terror attack and rightfully acted to punish those responsible. The tens of thousands of civilian casualties simply aren't enough to move the needle of public opinion because Israel is a topic rife with such vitriol from practically every angle and every voting demographic. Running the risk of alienating voters ahead of an election where if he loses it means Donald Trump gets back in power was too much to ask until we hit some sort of breaking point. The obvious and inexcusably deliberate murder of aid workers was that point, Biden now has cover to actually come down on Netanyahu without political pushback.

Yeah it was only after this that public opinion swung. Like it or not, the deaths of nine westerners caught in the cross fire mattered more than the actual war being waged. That's the scale you have to use.
