Well focus Steiner until you start getting more options above 50 since he's capped there at the moment. I'm stuck in this boat with Rinoa who I have a 5* for.

He's super average but also useful in that you can basically use his access to all abilities to customize a particular build, which may only be possible on certain characters or none at all, like say tauntaliate with a ranged weapon.

Definitely useful to have leveled to 50 at least to fill in a slot that would typically require 2 distinct characters

Your best bet for upgrading equipment is to use the daily dungeons on Mondays and... Fridays? Scarletite and Adamantite give significantly more exp towards the next rank for weapons and armor respectively. There are several tiers of these as with any other daily dungeon as well so you can do them at any level, even when you just started.

Obviously, the higher the ranking of the equipment the higher the exp requirements. For example, for your Aeris and Steiner 5* items you'd spend way too much gil to be feasible trying to upgrade them using 1* and 2* equipment you gathered. Even using the tiny and small scarletite and adamantite wouldn't be very economical.

As far as what to do with the 1* and 2* armor and weapons you get; if you jsut started, you should upgrade and combine a few different weapons and armors for each realm. After you have a few max combined (3*/4*) you can start just selling them off. At least that's what I do.

EDIT: Also, yes. Use Aerith and Steiner for now. If you can;t get Aerith's Memory Crystal from the event it'll be kind of crappy, but you can at least take them both to 50. After that, and you get some new characters, you can also use their equipment on other characters as 5* character-specific weapons and armor generally have higher base stats than other 5* weapons and armor. I use Squall's Revolver on my other melee because it gives about 8 more attack than my next best sword.

The Monday/Friday gear dungeons also drop 2* mythril gear and weapons to combine too which is great starter equipment.

Using scarletite and adamantite for equipment upgrade is also a good idea because it's cheaper than using low rarity gear.

Yes, always - but the autoequip system knows this so usually you just have to say "Optimize" before going into a level and it'll equip your best stuff for that level.

Generally yes. The easiest way to check, that I know if, is to enter that Realm (choose a portrait and hit GO) then go to the Party menu, and Inventory. You can check weapon and armor stats that way. The ones with Sync will have a white border around their icons.

It gets trickier when you're talking about a 3* item combined to a 5* (I.E. Fencing Saber++). Those weapons will have lower base stats, but may come out a couple points ahead with Sync. I think the Fencing Saber ++ (base 3*) has 2 more attack than a Zantetsuken (base 5*) when Fencing Saber gets FFX Sync bonus.

If you want to use the Soul Break weapon, put the character you want to use it on top of your formation, otherwise equip it on a character not in your party.

The issue is I have a Soul Break dagger that the game sometimes equips on a mage... Even in other circumstances a realm 4* may be better but it will still equip it.

Mage Masher IX? I've got the same. It's still usually a top 3 weapon for me with a useful SB so I just put my katana or fist fighter on top to snag it.

Magic Breakdown, Power Break, Slowga Rude. Squall use Seph's RW SB. After Reno is Blind and Rude is slow, Slow Reno as well and Power Break him. Alternate Power Breaks on Rude and Reno until Rude is down. Thundaja on Rude, Waterja on Reno. Don't use Thunder on Reno.

To answer one of your first questions, this is probably the most generous freemium game I have ever played. The fact that the characters are not subject to RNG means that the only things you can buy in this game are stats. And while stats are definitely important, it's still much better than if the character themselves are in the gacha.

Think you can refine the strat to try again? Dunno if you feel it's worth it, but at least it's not crazy stamina

Optimize needs way more work than just that. For me, it will prioritize an armor that has 2 more DEF and 34 less RES than the armor I want to equip.

That 2 extra DEF isn't going to do anything for my damage mitigation.
