Esuna?
Esuna?
Wait, if a retaliator is asleep and you hit them then they still retaliate? I would think that being asleep prevents them from retaliating the wake-up hit? Or does it just auto-miss with no retaliation hit?
Comparing reflect and retaliator is dumb
Retaliator work on physical aoe while reflect doesn't on magic aoe
And once again retaliate requires much less gear to accomplish stuff
It's mostly for lazy or bad players who couldn't clear content otherwise
Or maybe just players that want to use the best strategy in certain fights. Brynhildr and Shiva(XIII) are perfect examples of battles where you can take advantage of this. But these battles are kinda rare, just like battles that are turned into jokes by Reflect/Carbuncle or Runic.
Retaliate is a very good skill and there's no shame in using it (or any other cheap tactic like Reflect on Waltz #3, Death/Raise/Break, future SB spam setups, etc.).
This game is all about exploiting weaknesses and patterns, why wouldn't you bring Draw Fire+ Retaliate against a boss that spams single target physical attacks and hits 4+ times in a row?
Damn, no Deathgaze
Took Firaja to r3 as suggested, since I saw Ice Dragon is fire-weak (not that I need it but whatever).
This. Retaliate as people use it should be a stepping stone; I "abused" retaliate 1 time on my JP account to beat an EX++ when I had level 30s (and even then I only used at max 4 attacks by my BRD on the retaliator to beat it before Zantetsuken went off) and I've abused retaliate 0 times on my global account. If Rata can beat a certain fight with his shit 5* luck, you shouldn't be abusing retaliate unless you're underleveled/geared. For clarification, abusing retaliate is any other character attacking the retaliator besides the monsters.
Frenchists can't math or english
You're right, it's even more broken because it makes you invincible when those two skills are activated. Just like Reflect against Seymour #1 and Waltz #3.
And you can heal through Reflect guys, it's called Kirin (or SBs if you're lucky enough to have one). Usually ,when you do bring Reflect, healing is not an issue. If it is, Reflect is probably not worth bringing.
To add to the retaliate discussion, I avidly use the shit out of retaliate for basically everything, especially advantaliate with annoying fights, and even I agree, shit is too OP. I have noticed however since orbfest that now that I have high hones on R4 abilities, I am not using retaliate as much as I used to, for example, I no longer use it for daily dungeons since Rydia can cap dmg kill everything with R3 Valefor and R3 Ruinga. I am still gonna use the fuck out of advantaliate though for +++s that don't have any clear weaknesses (now that I have 2 sets of agas at R4 and ajas at R3, don't need it anymore for weakness bosses).
If we're going to keep at this little debate let's at least stay on track. Using any particular strat on a few fights that require it is not the issue, I wouldn't even call this an issue as it's more an anomaly. What we're talking about is trying to use the same strategy to run through pretty much everything.
Using Kirin for healing is not the same as being able to do a direct single target heal. The amount recovered is dramatically different and you need the big cures for most "high level" bosses or run a high risk of being 2-shot. And you're right, if healing is an issue then there's a good chance that you won't want to use reflect, which is not something that retaliate suffers from. You get a great deal from a 2* ability:
- Physical (single target) damage nullified
- Physical AoE damage nullified
- Attack is based on the retaliators stats, not who attacked them
- No detrimental effects (like the inability to be single target healed)
- You don't just retaliate once, you retaliate as many times as you were hit (like when using Tauntaliate on Bryhildr, if you were hit by the AoE, you retaliated 5? times from a single attack)
Dudes literally saying Reflect is more OP than Retaliate strat?

I never said that, learn to read maybe? In those fights it is because those enemies use only single target magic (with the occasional weak attack) and reflect basically makes you immune to their damage while adding more on top of it.
I'm well aware of the main use of Retaliate and I was just listing examples of things that are even more broken in certain situations. Draw Fire+Retaliate is a perfect example anyway because you should be hitting your retaliator unless you have mages able to hit 9999 or simply higher than your Samurai of choice. Is it broken? Yes. Should we call people bad players because they're using one of the best skills in the game to their advantage? No.
Retaliate is not a bug or an exploit, it was designed this way.
"In those fight it is"
Then theres no comparison with Retaliate which gets thrown around for a LOT of very different fights.
