Read liveblogs, don't expect anything concrete until heads of state deliver statements. Times like this misinformation flies hard and fast and gets parroted too often to provide anything reliable. There's no real use in trying to form a connection with an event from four months ago when a much more recent event has more overlapping features.

Tyvm for the info. I read that there were warnings to detour this airspace if you were below certain feet, but this plane was like 5k+ above that. Is that true? Would that suggest they knew it was a commercial plane since it was up so high? (Or maybe an accident because it would be harder to tell?)

At least 100 bodies have been found so far at the scene, an emergencies worker told Reuters news agency, with wreckage spread across an area of up to about 15km (nine miles) in diameter.

"I was working in the field on my tractor when I heard the sound of a plane and then a bang and shots," a witness called Vladimir told Reuters.

"Then I saw the plane hit the ground and break in two. There was thick black smoke."

Ukrainian media have broadcast audio purported to be conversations intercepted by the Security Service between pro-Russian militants, in which several men talk about having shot down a civilian plane.

The warnings were to detour from the area regardless of the height, for this very reason. However you can't police these companies from not operating in these parts -- obviously it takes a tragedy very much like this one that finally makes companies be decisive and stop on these matters.
