On the diet front it’s been a week since I totally cut out sweet tea and regular soda. I usually have one Coke Zero in the morning (don’t drink coffee) but otherwise no more sodas. Just water or like, Crystal Light infused water. No sweets. Mostly been proteins and veggies. Feeling aight with it. Tonight’s dinner was a grilled chicken breast with some lemon pepper seasoning and GANG of steamed broccoli. I’ve found those little one serving tuna pouches in the store are pretty good too, I’ll put them in a low carb spinach wrap and sprinkle in a lil shredded mozzarella cheese and it’s pretty good.

It’s kinda noticeable how after cutting out sweets and other assorted unhealthy snacks that my main protein in my meal is like, the highlight of my day lol

It's not going to be 1:1 comparable but it's great if you're more focused on hypertrophy

Today was cardio and after introductory chit chat with my trainer she said “today we are working on our sprints!!!” in the most cheery tone. Oh no. OH NO. But it honestly wasn’t terrible. Unlike some places I have been where the trainer is almost drill sergeant-esque this gym’s trainers are all about you finding your baseline and then incrementally increasing it. “Full sprints” is your full sprint speed, not theirs. Felt good because I felt like I was pushing myself but not pushing myself to injury or exhaustion.
Long ago when I did work with a personal trainer, in a cheerful voice she told me all the trainers were doing a six pack challenge amongst themselves and she was not going to lose.

By far the most painful workout I had. Felt good after but holy shit she ran me through the ringer.

The greatest lesson I learned with training is you have to go at your pace, not your instructor's.

Those machines are fantastic. While I wouldn't suggest completely abandoning the standard bench, as it's essential for developing stabilizer muscles that support daily activities and prevent injuries, machines offer a valuable alternative. If you're nursing an injury or have already performed several compound lifts, switching to machines can help focus on pumping blood into the muscles while giving your joints a well-deserved rest.

I would love to have one of those at my gym.

One of the dudes I swim with is getting so mad that's he's getting older. His pace is falling off pretty slowly but i think he actually wastes more energy bitching about it between sets and then goes even slower bc of it. i'm too scared to say anything bc he's also a super nice guy

Somehow managed to gain a pound between this week and last, despite working at a caloric deficit of at least 500 and sometimes up to 1000 every single day.

During my cutting phases, I can go weeks without seeing any change in my weight. Typically, this is just my body retaining water and, in my opinion, filling the fat cells with it in anticipation of future calorie intake. After a few weeks, I usually experience a significant drop of 3-5 pounds seemingly out of nowhere, and then my weight plateaus again for a few more weeks.

If you go more than a month without progress at a caloric deficit, it’s time to reassess your approach. While this might not apply to you, many people unknowingly consume extra calories through untracked snacking. For instance, a slice of bread here, a fingerful of cheese there—these small bites can add up. I've observed someone consume 400 calories just by nibbling while cooking, and they couldn't understand why they weren't losing weight.

Machines are great but make sure you're getting the stretch where the invisible bar would be touching your chest. Regular bench is overrrated imo but incline is god tier for chest development. Like others have said though, with just starting out you won't be working any stabilizers which is fine, but realize that if you ever swap to free weights. You'll not lift free weight wise. I swear by smith machine incline bench + pec deck machines for chest development.

Yes I’m fully aware about the trap about weighing yourself constantly. Don’t care. Ten days of cleaner eating (seven of which had gym visits) and I am down 6 pounds from my initial weigh in. Hell yeah.

I'm pro daily weighing when you're changing your weight. Just don't be weak minded if you don't see the numbers you want in a short time frame.

i think in general how you feel look and perform are far more important than the number but ya could be a nice sense of tangible accomplishment to see how far you've come and a good indicator to commit to the lifestyle consistently

It's not weak minded and that's a pretty dumb metric to only go by with weight loss. 1) how do they feel 2) how are clothes fitting and 3) their bloodwork and health markers are also factors to use that might be much more important than just weight on the scale.

If you're not in a competition or something where you need your weight daily you can give yourself a complex with that scale

weighing every day initially shows you what you can do but after you've done your initial bomb drop I find it better to swap to a weekly cadence. I always go for friday morning so I can decide whether i'm gonna have drinks on friday night or drive my wife. I try to do bloodwork every 3 months for cholesterol checks

Daily weights are only helpful if you're okay with the numbers you see and aren't discouraged by plateaus. They can definitely be deceitful though, and generally milk is right. Are your clothes fitting more loosely, do you look more toned, do you feel more energetic?

There's a reason we use waist size instead of BMI when tracking weight gain in our patients.

Clothes feel is the holistic approach. Weight loss can be offset by muscle gain to a degree so while your body composition changes your weight may stay the same.
