Go to a running specialist. Have them check your gait and foot shape. They'll get you set up. Best in BR is Fleet Feet on Perkins.

I had shin issues for a bit and it was almost 100% the shoes I was using.

    YO, SATH.

YOU CAN FUCKING DO IT MAN. THINGS ARE LOOKING UP FOR YOU, AND YOU GOT THIS WHOLE LIFE THING. Seriously, cheering you on - I like reading your updates lately.

As for running, I dislike it, too for the main reason of I get winded easily. I don't have the feet/ankle problems but I am really bad at managing my breathing. Or was - it's gotten better and I started out slow. I think treadmill/flat surfaces like a track would be best especially if you have flat feet and shin splints. Start out slow, when you realize breathing is becoming a problem slow down and draw longer breaths, become actively aware of your breathing and try to manage it.

    Edit: Feet specialist!

    1. Running is stupid

    2. Lift weights faster.

    Problem solved.

Statistics show that 100% of people that run for exercise eventually die.

Statistics show that 100% of the people that lift weights are awesome.

    Your call.

Edit; running coach and feet specialist.

I have some Nike's with good-ish arch support but I was hoping you guys may have some other options / other things I can do to help prevent the shin splints I'm worried about getting. Also how do you even get back into running? I get winded looking at people running, despite being in reasonably good physical shape. I've thought about going to a track or around the lake or something but I feel like I'm gonna end up on the side of the road gasping for breath after 30s. Suggestions?
Never really had the shin problems but when I was in track the runners that had those issues would do things like icing or put some kind of binding on them. Also a lot of them really hated running on harder surfaces and would try to ditch out on our runs around town on the hard sidewalks.

As far as getting back into it it's pretty simple. Get some decent running shoes and start running. Helps a lot of it you are already in decent shape. When I tried to start up again I was still had a huge belly which made it so running would pull my back out so I had to put it off till I shed some. But I was biking a bit so that is also a okish intermediary (different range of motion and such so not necessarily activities that completely carry over but get used to pushing your legs hard and mild aerobics). Personally most the time I just do a quick jog around the block when I got some free time between ffxi, life and meals. Occasionally
when I'm bored of ffxi and irl shit is squared away going around to local parks and hiking around is great. Hell just walking around town is a decent way to discover all the neet little places you miss driving everywhere and decent exercise and work up to running/finding places to run. Finding a running buddy is also great. Partly because of that whole making sure you actually go thing and pushing you more than you'd probably push yourself/racing each other. Man I need running buddies

As far as lasting... well you should last longer than 30s. If you can't you might want to slow down a tad as that sounds like an all out sprint lol. Could start out with practicing proper breathing and foot placement at slower paces/fast walks. Makes a bit of a difference when you are going hard enough you can't focus on it. Also nothing wrong with getting winded. I personally have never really been a distance runner physically or mentally so I just do a lot of sprints into jog/walks. Like currently I sprint the long sides of my block and walk the short sides trying to recover enough for the next sprint. It's not for everyone. Most tell me it's way harder but if you're not the kind of person that can jog for miles it's not too bad. Really need to stretch though if doing that sort of thing

Make sure to set goals and keep track. It will be hard at first to keep track of progress like anything else. Start trying to reach a half mile or 5 mins without breaking into a walk. once you get that you can jog 1/2 mile, rest/walk, do another, rest/walk for 20-25 mins. Then start aiming for like 10 mins and 15 mins without breaking a jog. Once you get there you can maintain for 20-30 np. After that you can start working on upping the pace but basically the first step is getting that 30 mins of jogging baseline without breaking into a walk.

I just started running again too since it's basically the only thing I can do at the work gym. I get 30-40 mins during lunch 3 days a week to balance around weight lifting and Hiit. I run hard on Tuesday and Thursday, bike on Wed for recovery, Lift in the afternoons. It (Noon) hasn't affected my strength training (7pm) at all but I don't go over 30 mins.

Have you recently changed meds or something? You're actually starting to worry me.

Oh also, I like cannot breathe out of my nose currently. Not well anyway. So I sorta have to huff and puff through my mouth and when running and shit that tends to not work great.

This sounds like a good idea to start with. Thanks. I will also try to see a feet specialist, but probably won't because my insurance right now is shitsandwich and won't be okay until I'm in Boston.

Before you start running, see a nose doctor for the sinuses. I wouldn't recommended running without clear breathing passages. If it's just a cold or something that you know will go away, then ignore the doctor advice but if it's persistent, get it checked out, obvs.

No joke, I read this thing once where a dude just thought he had a perpetually runny nose but it was actually brain fluid leaking through tissue or something and while it wasn't inhibiting him/super dangerous it needed to be repaired. (googled- cerebrospinal fluid leak)

Neither of those sound like fun, so no! And since I have an official day off, I'm ain't going nowhere.

Though, I do notice you post an insane amount during normal work hours, too, Zet.

Hate running, but HIIT is manageable. While I vastly prefer lifting, I still need legit cardio for lacrosse. Fast lifting may work, but doesn't seem to raise my VO2 max significantly.

I rather run than hiit but I try to get spurts of hiit heart rate when I run anyway so it's almost like doing hiit.

Can check your pronation at home with wet feet and paper towels, saves you time at the store. I over pronate and am a bit heavier of a runner and with that knowledge I knew I wanted these Mizunos before I went to the store. Tried them on, loved them, bought them off ebay new for 30$ cheaper.

Actually looking to pick up Nike Metcon 2's this week or next cause I'm tired of bringing 2-3 pairs of shoes with me to the gym. Maybe I'll start wearing my chuck taylor's outside of the gym instead of only at the gym.

I should see a nose doctor for my sinuses?!?!?!

Wow. Much insight. It definitely hasn't been a 15 year on-going problem I've posted about and have had surgery for. I'll get on this right away thx so much.

I assume that explanations of what I may or may not see on said towels will be google-able so I'll look into that. Thanks!

Just walked 4 miles after a workout and it was pretty good. Bit sore in the feet and didn't do any jogging but will try next time. Just wanted to do something to start.

If I wasnt posting while driving and out all day I'd be able to explain more but yes all googleable. Look into gait as mentioned, pronation, running if heavier, beginner running shoes etc.
