Lets try a slightly different set of circumstances. Some guy beats your ass for whatever reason. Would you track him down, then confront him at work, where putting up any resistance could get him fired unless he just passively sat there and took it? There are a million places you could hold the confrontation, but you choose the one place where he can't honestly respond.

Anybody with a sibling should understand. You keep picking on your younger brother until your dad threatens to kick your ass if you don't cut it out. Then little brother decides to take advantage and turn the tables, knowing full well you have to sit and take it unless you want a taste of dad's belt.

This is about a guy releasing information on an innocent couple to get back at a third party. You're so concerned with giving the offender a chance to speak his piece when his actions show he deserves no such courtesy.

No, you're right. Regardless of how bad this looks (though the details are sketchy enough that one should be skeptical of how embellished the article is), this has little to no bearing on any legal issues surrounding Michael Brown's death as there's no indication that any family members would have direct witness testimony to give. It's basically tabloid fodder on the level of reporting about the Palin family getting into a drunken brawl.

In other news, people seem to be getting antsy regarding an impending grand jury decision. Photos are popping up of armored vehicles and drones in the area, so it seems like assets are being put in place now. People assume it's going to be soon, but probably not for at least another week if not longer (the 15th/16th of November is being tossed around as the earliest date to expect any big news about it).

The dysfunctional family story is absolutely relevant should this case go to a full blown trial. It limits the number of character witnesses the prosecution can use on behalf of Michael Brown. Any defense worth their salt will point to the monetary gain these family members have made exploiting his death.
