Not just strategic in their locations, but strategic in

    1) GOALS, you need them, what are they? What needs to be changed? Who needs to be reached to get that change?

    2) Actions that move you toward your goals.

What's being done so far? Raising awareness? Then what... or is that it? Is the plan to raise awareness and hope that changes something? Hope and change? lol@irony

This is another "fad" protest movement at the moment that will die down once people vent their anger out doing weird things. There's little organization, 0 strategy, and short-sighted goals. Afaik, anyway.

So far the protests in Boston have cost $2m in OT. I would hate to see the cost of towns with larger protests like NYC

.... wrong thread, but i'm gonna leave it anyways lol

At my old job we made time and half for every hour after 40. Then double time for every hour after 52 hours. Sundays or your 2nd day off was always double time. This was at Boeing and about 6 years ago. I think OT depends on the state and the company, not too sure though.

Most of those that I've heard about were done in locations that were on the other side of the protesters. Rosa Parks not moving in the bus, the Woolworth's in N.C., etc. Directly sending a message to those who can make changes. Why aren't protesters gathering outside of police stations or city hall? Why not do a march to a home of one of their legislators to hand deliver a petition signed by protesters asking for more action? Blocking an interstate just leaves a very confusing message.
This is a fair criticism; the tactics employed show little benefit in the production of change. I imagine if/when someone concocts a protest-plan that encourages the changes they seek, it will be enacted.

But the other things you mentioned (petitions, protests outside police stations/city hall, etc.) go back to my issue of compartmentalization. It's easy to ignore those things, and often times easier to shut down.

Does that apply for the cops required to be on scene for road work? That's always seemed like such a ridiculous scam.

Yeah. They're called details, and are usually paid for by the entity doing the work. It's how most agencies make money, as most don't generate nearly enough revenue from tickets or asset seizure as the media would like you to believe. My agency gets outside overtime work from construction, sporting events, bar security, protection details, there's plenty of opportunities, you just gotta jump on it.

Cops around here make like $27/hour just to direct traffic after hockey games, it's insane. If I had any interest in law enforcement I'd jump all over that shit on days I have free.

It was good until about 3-4 years ago when budget cuts forced us to spread the wealth a bit. I just barely make salary sometimes. We have a court key day to reduce overtime, all of our cases that are non-violent are paperless (meaning you don't need to appear), traffic court is an appearance only if the ticket is contested, which can be done online now, and overtime is spread out among the 3000 member force. If I get held over on a big case, I need to take a compensatory day so I don't get overtime.

The only overtime I get is for big events like the protests. My division is currently AHOD (All Hands on Deck) so we can infiltrate the groups and grab the instigators. Day one we had 500 or so protesters. Now we're down to like 25 or so Overtime is drying up.

Our county actually started mandating all overtime is taken in cash now, no comp time since they typically have to hire people for OT anyways to cover your shift due to budget cuts causing us to vacate a bunch of open positions.

My understanding is that rampant ticketing / asset seizure issues are localized to particular parts of the country, often specific precincts where the political structure or police culture has fostered that kind of interaction with either local residents or out-of-state people who travel through. It gets the kind of attention it does because it's an awful practice, but obviously it doesn't happen everywhere or to everyone. Details seem infinitely preferable to me as a means of generating revenue and I imagine it's generally better work too.

Wanna know a secret? I'm far less likely to kill a black person in my PSA, despite the region being 95% black by population. Know why? The people in my area aren't insane. Capitol Police and US Secret Service attract all types of batshit insane. No thanks. The people in my neighborhoods, despite being heavily invested in drugs and gangs, are real people. The people that the Capitol and USSS deal with are EDP's that are far worse than anything you can imagine. I'm far more suspicious and more likely to kill a white or a Hispanic that wanders in to my PSA than the regulars.

Yeah, it's definitely moreso on the West Coast and down South than it is here. We have almost $2,000,000 in asset seizures from FY2014, which is a drop in the bucket for operational costs.

Wow, the two young women on the frontlines who helped carry these protests from the beginning, @MusicOverPeople @bdoulaoblongata are now married. Couldn't have been a more beautiful couple.
