Intercept Reporter Shot With Beanbags and Arrested While Covering Ferguson Protests

    https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2...uson-protests/

At a press conference early this morning, Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson told reporters in Ferguson that 31 arrests had been made, including members of the “criminal element” from “as far away as New York.” When asked by a reporter if any of those 31 had been reporters, he immediately–and falsely–replied, “these people were not journalists that were arrested.
Ryan and Lukas Hermsmeier, a reporter for the German newspaper De Bild, were both apprehended last night—and shot with beanbags and rubber bullets—while attempting to return to their car after a night of reporting. When they were shot at, they had their hands raised in the air and were shouting, “Press! Press! Press!”

Indeed; or the headshots occurred after the center of mass shots caused the suspect to double over thus putting the head in center of mass territory (as suggested in one autopsy report). It's plausible, but certainly not definite. Hence why I wouldn't choose one side or the other at this juncture.

LANDOVER, Md. -- The "Hands up, don't shoot" protest has made its way to the NFL.

The Washington Redskins secondary emerged from the stadium tunnel during pregame introductions Monday night with hands raised and palms forward.

It was a show of solidarity with the people in Ferguson, Missouri, who are protesting the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Eleven players took part as the team was preparing to face the Cleveland Browns.

Safety Ryan Clark said Brown "could have been any one of us. That could have been any one of our brothers, our cousins. ... When you get an opportunity to make a statement and be more than a football player, it's good."

Protesters have gathered daily in Ferguson since Brown was fatally was shot by a police officer Aug. 9.

    More "clerical errors"

78 Arrested Overnight, Most From Missouri, Arrest Records Show

Jail records obtained by NBC News show that at least 78 people were arrested overnight at the protests in Ferguson, Missouri — more than double the total reported by authorities — and that the overwhelming majority of them were from Missouri.

Of the 78, all but three were arrested for refusing to disperse, the records show. Two people, both from the St. Louis area, were arrested for unlawful use of a weapon, and a man from Rockton, Illinois, was arrested for interfering with an officer.

Authorities had reported early that 31 people were arrested overnight. Authorities early Tuesday blamed people from out of town for some criminal activity.

The records reflect people who were booked into the St. Louis County jail. It is possible, but not clear, that others were booked at other jails.

The records show that 18 people from outside Missouri were arrested Monday night and early Tuesday. They came came from as far away as Brooklyn, Washington, D.C., and San Diego.

    Great article by Dave Zirin:

The Major Problem With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Powerful Essay on Ferguson
There is so much good in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Time magazine essay about the protests following the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, that it almost feels churlish to raise any kind of criticism. After all, here is a basketball legend, the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, the master of the skyhook, marshaling his platform to speak about poverty and class in the United States. Kareem even references the new book Unspeakable Things: Sex, Lies and Revolution, by radical journalist Laurie Penny.

Everyone should read his piece. People in the United States with positions of authority rarely, if ever, talk about class. And yet here is Kareem putting not just Ferguson but the whole of the United States directly under that economic microscope saying, “We have to address the situation not just as another act of systemic racism, but as what else it is: class warfare.”

if the kid was doubling over from the first x amount of shots, why did he continue to shoot? i know we arent trained to attempt to empty a clip; loss of life is the last thing you want on your hands as an arm of the law in any capacity, unless lethal force against you was imminent. knowing this kid was unarmed, not a good look.

Saw that, FMLA can have weird restrictions. My wife was told repeatedly that even accessing her email could result in disciplinary action - probably got her in trouble with her employer by tweeting that depending on their policies. I'd doubt it has anything to do with validity, do reporters even care about that anymore?

Guess we'll see in the next few weeks whether or not it's true...

Random tumblr comment, anyone else read about this elsewhere?

"TUESDAY 8/19: Ferguson PD presented a table full of fabricated evidence at this morning’s press conference - allegedly seized from protestors and stopped cars. The Colt 45 Molotov with a white bandana was the crowning glory, turns out you can’t even buy glass 40’s in Missouri. Stay classy, FPD"

If rioters and vagrants are all from out of town, wouldn't their weapons be from out of town too?

thats hilarious, because this means they are being trained to kill everyone they contact that they may need to testify. we are trained to fire twice, center mass, and only more if necessary, unless yo ass cant shoot.

Let's assume that you're correct (which isn't out of the realm of possibility if we're being logical, of course). Are we assuming that the rioters are leaving Missouri, buying a glass Colt 45, and making a Molotov out of it ... or that they have a spare one lying around? Or do you think it's safer to assume that if they wanted to make a molotov, they could easily do so given the abundance of alcohol found at local liquor stores?

Missouri isn't a dry state. Alcohol isn't hard to come by.

Illinois, on the other hand, I have never shopped at (for alcohol). Given the proximity of places such as O'Fallon I don't know how reasonable it is to assume that these are coming from there.

What is most definitely safe to assume is that the people causing this are NOT from Ferguson, yet the citizens of Ferguson are paying in droves.
