I think I've told one of my favorite stories on BG before, which involved very carefully wrapping up a 24 pack of Vanilla Coke in old shirts and couch pillows to ship them to someone. (He sold some of the cans at $20 a pop to some other guys, and said he loved the pillows and shirts because they smelled like home.)

The violence that grips the Middle East right now is very real, and very terrible, and very brutal—and those descriptors don't do it justice. The friend I referred to in the prior paragraph only came home because he was driving, hit an IED, and—if I remember correctly—he was the only one who survived—and he was a medic. Always wanting to help people, he once advised me to snap a pencil to splint my toe when I fucked it up. He always cared greatly and wanted more than anything to help people. Still does of course, but I can't imagine the guilt he deals with every day, having gone through that.

What I took issue with, and what I don't mean to harp on now by bringing it up again, is the implication that fear and overreaction makes people stupid. Like you, I greatly despise conspiracy theorists and extremism in general. I only meant to state that everything is accumulative, and that it's all right for people to be fearful, even if they need to be brought down from the extremes of those fears.

Shut up bitch, we friends now.
speaking of which, i leave the states here in about 6 hours. peace out, faggots

I don't really write many citations. I like to give people breaks, unless they're being complete morons. Not much traffic here anyways unless you want to bust 100,000 people for illegal turn on red or wrong direction on a one-way.

It breaks down in Appendix Table 2 on the BJS stats sheet (page 15). The states identified submitted "some" but not all of the years recorded. Georgia, Montana, and Maryland did not submit for all the years, and Wyoming submitted one year out of the seven, with Nevada only submitting three years of seven.

Also, this is one jurisdiction that doesn't prove the rate of shooting blacks is significantly, or exponentially higher than whites on a national level like people allege. They seem to have a pretty average murder rate all around.

Yes, it's true that the cops get the benefit of the doubt in front of a jury. If the entirety of a case falls between your word and a cops word, the cop is 'telling the truth.' They don't deserve that credit, and haven't for years and years.
So you say. It's all hearsay conspiracy theory BS dude.

It's almost like regular people don't lie at all, but the cops do it all the time. Cops have a lot to lose when it comes to stuff like that. Desk duty sucks. You can never work the street again or be part of an arrest ever again if you're caught in a lie. All of your old cases get re-examined when you fill out a Giglio Disclosure when you go for your annual review and Defense Attorneys LOVE to grab those. Police service records are available through the Giglio review. You'll never walk away from that type of accusation. Never hold another position with a police department ever again. That's the price they pay. It's misconduct unbecoming of a government official, which gets you terminated 9/10 times. Those who are lucky enough to get desk duty are the ones who are close to retirement or have service records that are outstanding (though, one could argue that your outstanding service record is a lie). Just because criminal charges don't get brought, punishment does happen.

Trust me or not; try being a cop and see for yourself.

Word on the street is this interviewee isn't a real police officer. Will dig more, but the 4chan collective is working to destroy anything that gives the Brown side of the case clout (I don't agree with it, but it's still interesting).

I agree with her sentiment that it's a fear based society. Police Officers from Day One of the academy are taught to fear for their lives. We undergo over 1000 hours of training on the various ways a person will try to kill you, with a small portion of that dedicated to "Community relations" and "speaking to people with respect". We watch hundreds of videos of the various police shootouts, killings, read case law over the murder of police officers, retell and discuss various instances and stories of police officers getting involved in extraordinary situations, learn how officers get burned out and killed by complacency, it's all brainwashing to make the Police a very fearful profession.

I argue the rest of that is just her trying to make a name for herself. She can claim whatever she wants. I bet she doesn't get treated any differently, and go so far as to say that she probably feels shitty because no one treats her with kid gloves. The females in my department get shit talked and called out just as much as guys. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, male, female, you're not immune to the shitbagging. You do something, you get shit talked. Every profession has the same standards. No one in here can honestly say you don't talk shit about your coworkers or about the customers you serve. If you do claim that you don't, then you're a liar.

People can even claim that the Police are racist just by that standard. But if we all feel comfortable making fun of X-Officer being a shitty Asian driver, and he feels comfortable calling me a fat Irish/Nazi Gestapo, and Sergeant suchandsuch feels comfortable about calling me a "Cracker" in front of my coworkers and I don't even bat an eye, is it racism? Or did I fuck up and I'm being reprimanded because I just fucked up? Racism is all about perception. If I don't perceive that I'm being biased by someones actions, then it's a simple case of that guy being an idiot.

Plus, no other profession in America can say they feel comfortable standing over a 3 day old body and hold full-blown water cooler conversations about how shitty RGIII is going to be this year. That's our reality. Our coworkers and ourselves will probably die very violent deaths in their career. We are all very close, closer than family. We'll talk shit from sun up, to sun down. It's because of that, that we all will probably go to hell.

You're an exception. Military isn't a profession, it's a infringement on your right to run naked in the streets with green jello on your body. You are Navy though... Might have more pull than I did in the Army.

Sorry for interrupting whatever conversation you guys were having, but I was wondering if this was discussed at all? I haven't kept up in a few days and I don't know if this is hte most appropriate thread for it, but I feel like it's relevant. http://www.alternet.org/civil-libert...icide-shooting

I think this is the 2nd report of this happening in the past couple weeks (Someone handcuff'd, cops claim suicide by shooting themselves in the back).

God the fact that they're going to get away with this is bullshit.

To be fair, the probability of dying a violent death as a police officer is incredibly low. Perhaps it is higher than the odds of some paper pusher, but it is under 0.1% annually.

There are ~120k police officers in the US: http://www.nleomf.org/facts/officer-fatalities-data/

    There's 800,000 LEO's.

And yeah, statistically, it's a pretty low chance, almost statistically impossible.

Still doesn't make us paranoid as hell.

I see. I don't think thats an appropriate thread for it though, personally. That thread is mostly for dumb shit that xyz does, or celebrity nonsense, not about police getting away with murder of someone who was in handcuffs.

Wikipedia says there are 120k fulltime law enforcement officers able to make arrests and carry guns in the US (in 2008).

My point was that this is some stupid shit, and if this is your mentality then you're paranoid and seem to know-yet-ignore the facts:
Our coworkers and ourselves will probably die very violent deaths in their career.

First off, you're telling me to fact check, when you looked some shit up on Wikipedia of all places.

    http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=2216

Second, try to imagine being exposed to violence and death every day, then tell me you wouldn't be paranoid. Or, why not be a cop and give it some time to figure out if you'd feel the same way or not instead of "you're stupid and don't know what you're talking about".

it probably won't happen to me, but almost everyone gets skin cancer from the sun and dies a horrible death, so I'm justifiably paranoid about it

one time someone tried to open the blinds so I shot him 6 times, it's ok though, you're not allowed to question me or think I was in the wrong, I had a legitimate fear

Obama once gave sunlight to mexican cartels and sunlight was found where a border patrol officer was shot a year later
