I actually went through all the weeks to sorta have a layout, then was going to alter it as I went.

When I made the layout I put the harder choices first so it would be easier to shuffle around the stronger teams.

But then I forgot to check the eliminator today. XD

It doesn't matter, it's good to try and get the hang of it.

Because you are eliminated once you get a game wrong, it makes the most sense to use your stronger teams early, or at least the teams you are most confident in.

Worry about picking a team for Week 14 once you actually make it there.

You're not actually doing it just for practice; you can still win if you end up with more correct picks than anyone else. However, if there is a tie (and there has been most years) at, say, 15 or 16 correct picks, whoever had the longer streak to start the season wins it. I'm about 98% sure nobody has made it through a full season perfect yet.

Why is there no reverse eliminator...pick a team to lose every week

That is a great idea, I'll have to look into that next year. The easy solution would be to use the same standings, but the person with the fewest correct picks wins. However, a "No Pick" would count the same as a "Wrong Pick," which works in the normal Eliminator but is the exact opposite of what we want here.

My strategy for Eliminator, for what its worth.

1) The NFL is unpredictable, particularly early in the season. Don't get cute early on, take the safest bet the first few weeks with the most dependable teams. There will always be really good teams left later in the season, and the quality of teams fluctuates a lot as the season goes on (i.e. the Giants started 0-6, but finished 7-3 last year).
2) Don't take ANY team on the road unless you absolutely have to, particularly early in the season when you have lots of options. Week 16 Broncos @ Raiders or Seahawks @ Rams? Probably OK. Those same games in Week 2? No thanks; those teams will have much better games to pick for them later.
3) Don't be afraid to take a team just because they are the obvious pick and everybody else is picking them. This isn't a Vegas line that's going to move one way or another based on public opinion. For instance, there's one really, really obvious play next week -- the Patriots. Spoiler alert: that's who I'm taking. The Eliminator home page will also show you the percentage of people taking each team.
4) Somewhere between Week 8 and 10, map out the rest of your season. By that time, you have a pretty good idea who is good and who isn't. You also won't reach Week 17 and realize "Well, crap, I got three games wrong, but the Seahawks, Broncos, and 49ers are all still sitting here for me because I was trying to save them." After mapping out the season, check back every week to make sure something hasn't changed.
5) Keep an eye on playoff status for Week 16 & 17 to make sure the teams you have slotted in for those games might be resting starters because they are done. Try to pick the teams for those weeks that need the wins for playoff berths and/or seeding.

The flip side to this is not taking the popular team because if they lose and half your league drops you have a greater chance at winning that year. What's the point of winning the week if everybody else won too?

I don't think that's how this particular eliminator works. You still have to have the most correct picks at season's in. In the event of a tie, the person with the longest streak to start the season holds the tiebreaker.

In a true eliminator, you are correct, but not this one.
