Xbox Live has always been more robust than PSN. Install base has nothing to do with anything.

Edit: And Live is still hiccuping apparently. I haven't had any issues but the Status page is still listing some services as Limited.

Man, my cousin convinced me to get a PS4 and Destiny since we almost never get to see each other, even at family gatherings. So I got it, and then this happens lol. Only managed to set up PSN account (granted, timed out every step of the way). RIP weekend.

Also their copy pasted replies on twitter doesn't exactly paint them in good light, since they keep saying the same thing everyday.

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.
From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.
If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.

Can't remember my PSN PW and reset isn't working. Been trying to go through the ones I think it may be, but I'm still getting the server error 95% of the time.
