also a nugget of information for my straight homies: there is currently a shit storm over transphobic language ru paul used because ru paul thinks being a drag queen gives him the right to use transphobic language. Ru paul ignores that transgender and transsexual are two different things ( i can explain this for you if you'd like). So it's not uncommon to see gay men prance around like transsexuals owe them money and use language that is disrespectful to transpeople while on the flip side if you used fag the same way, some gay men might take offense.

In the past Transgender was used mostly to describe non binary or gender fluid trans folk where as transexual has always meant binary mtf or ftm. The term transexual has fallen out of favor with some people because they like to de emphasize sex from their gender identity because they're sick of people assuming that being trans is just some kind of fetish.

Sort of. Not quite, but close enough. Basically, gender and sex are two different things. Transgender refers to the gender aspect, and transsexual the sex aspect. Someone can be one or the other, or both, or neither. If you want to refer to both groups (as well as other similar groups), "trans" is the preferred term.

I'm conflicted in regards to the RuPaul thing. I've read the outrage that RuPaul is transphobic and I've read from trans- people that he isn't and people should lighten up. Honestly, Drag Race is a reality TV dramedy show so I take everything with a grain of salt. I think after everything the Female or She-male mini-challenge probably wasn't the best choice .... but overall, I don't think it was meant to attack or be offensive to trans- people. I try to remain neutral on these topics but on this one, I have to slightly align more with RuPaul. When he uses the words ladyboy or shemale, he's talking about drag queens or transvestites. Not that it justifies it's usage but I think the context of the words is what's important.

Ru paul responded to critics in an interview saying that he is transgender and thus "allowed" to use the term and that critics should lighten up. So of course he didn't mean to be offensive to transsexuals but he's not the one who gets to decide what transsexuals should be offended by.

That you found trans people that agree with your position doesn't mean anything. You could find plenty of gay men who will say loads of homophobic shit. They exist in the truckloads. Instead try to talk to transsexuals who are offended by the term and see it from their perspective.

Gay men might have a different kind of antipathy towards transsexuals than straight people do. While straight people might not have a clue what a transsexual is, a gay man might think that transsexuals are just gay men who want straight privilege or they might question why transsexuals are even included in lgbt at all.
