How do I transfer my current old 3DS XL data to a microSD (and then use it in the Old 3DS XL via a SD adapter?) I need to do this first before I can do the system transfer and retain the MH4U license, but it doesn't say how I do the first step. Do I put put the SD into my computer > copy data onto new microSD > and done? I didn't think this way would transfer my licenses and stuff

The licenses should be part of the system transfer, the SD card itself should just be the associated data.

leave your new 3ds stock. transfer to it. then copy paste your old 3ds files onto the new micro sd(or do it before hand, just transfer with stock card in place before you put in new one) insert, done.

Here's the Method again.

Method 1 (Recommended if you already have your old 3ds, a Micro SD card (that will be the one that goes in your new 3ds and a PC)

1) Remove the SD from your OLD 3DS
2) Put the SD in your PC
3) Create a folder on your PC
4) Copy everything from the SD to your PC
5) Put the Micro in your PC
6) Copy everything from the folder you created to the root of your Micro SD Card
7) Put the Micro SD + Your adapter in your Old 3ds

(Step 1-7 can be done now)
8) When you get your new 3ds, Power it on and DO NOT CREATE A NEW NNID)
9) Update it to your last firmware
10) Start system transfer on both system (chose carefully which is the target and source system)
11) Read the options correctly, when the the Target 3ds ask you if you are using a SD card say NO
12) Let the transfer complete
13) When it's over power off both system
14) Remove the Micro SD from old 3DS and put it in your new 3ds
15) Power on the new 3ds
16) Go to Eshop and redownload MH4I
17) Enjoy

So wasn't sure how you were supposed to transfer the data from one card to another. Once i realized it was linked to the system then figured its just a copy/paste job. I ordered a MM3DS XL from target.com on Friday with a 2 year protection plan.

Of course the order got cancelled, but target still charged me $30 for the protection plan lol

I'm not super-familiar with how SD cards work but my impression is that Nintendo doesn't use them for DRM - they use it to prevent filesystem tampering. I believe the files on the card are all signed using an ID generated from your DS as well as the card itself. That's why you can move files back and forth off the card without issue, but if you change DS units, you have to re-register the signing key and re-sign all your files on the card(s). The DS-to-DS transfer process can give the signing information to the destination DS, which is why you can just move the files off an SD card and onto a microSD and it will still work.

So you cannot take your SD card and put it in someone's else 3ds and play your Eshop games like that

Amazon is running a deal on PNY memory cards and while the 32gb isn't much cheaper than the Sandisk equivalent; the 64gb card is only $23 vs Sandisk's for $32. I'm not entirely convinced I'm going to need/want the extra storage though. I have tons of shit on my OG 3DS and I never had to use the SD card for anything.

I could be wrong but I think the new 3DS still only supports up to 32gb. I believe you can use larger cards (with some tweeking) but the system will still only use 32gb of it. At least that's how the Wii U works with external HD larger than 2TB.
